Down imaging 2d in the hull. Side imaging on a Transducer shield and saver mount on the jackplate. Makes for a nice clean install that is somewhat protected from stumpage. Sonar 2d will give you depth to 50 to 60 this way, hopefully.

I have a atlas and mounted to jackplate with a transducer sheild spring back bracket. U drill and tap the jack . Not the fiberglass . Razorcat has some good forums on this procedure.works nicely. If you decide to go with a Transducer Shield and Saver setup, they come with instructions and hardware to drill all the way through your jackplate to install their bracket. On the slidemaster 8″, if you do this, it will essentially lock your jackplate in place because now you have a bolt through the fixed and adjustable part on the plate. What I learned from this forum is to drill and tap the hole that will go into the adjustable plate and use a much shorter bolt. On the slidemaster, the black side plate is removable by removing the two bolts holding it on. The other hole thats closest to the transom goes through the fixed part of that jackplate only. This is on the slidemaster. Not sure about the Atlas but I would look at it with a critical eye.

Apdriver you are right. With the atlas . Mounting on the side I couldnt use that paticular mount due to my boat buckles.wasnt enough clearance. That why I chose the spring back bracket and mounted on the inside of the plate at the very bottom.although I had a friend done the very thing u was saying.
