Guys, I have never put this much energy into purchasing a $100 in my life, but I posted something yesterday about 07 vs 08 Navionics Hot Maps card. Deke and Ward brough out some very interesting points. I thought the navionics hot maps was what everyone was using, obviously I was incorrect. What are the differences in (adv/disadv) of Hot Maps vs Hot Spots vs Map Create/FHS. Deke thanks for posting those images on the website. It made me rethink my purchase. With some input from you guys I will make my purchase this afternoon and put this topic to rest. Thanks to everyone that responded to my post yesterday. I am sure most of you are tired of seeing it. Thanks all. -Lee
lreddmann, you are not wasting your time on that $100 purchase thought process. Figure out which one fits your style.
BCB, you are correct, I guess my primary concern would be navigation assitance and second would be to read contours of the lake for points, breaks and ledges. I have always fished little ponds and lakes or rode with others, so i need to make sure I stay in the channels and running lanes and dont jack up my new (new to me) rig. Hot Maps seem to be what most people have so looks like I am Hot Maps 07 bound unless someone can pursuade me otherwise. Thanks all. -Lee
Lee the Hotmaps 07 is the way to go in my opinion for 100.00. A lot of stores still sell the 07 for $150 and Id just get the 08 if that were the case. Make sure you also check the Lowrance site for any updates your unit may need to take the Navionics card. If you goto the Lowrance site, look up “updates” and check your unit you can find out if you might need one of those as well to run the 07 or 08 cards. Updating your unit is simple if you need to do it- You buy a $10 SD card(blank) $20 card reader that has a usb adapter Download your needed update onto a card big enuff to handle it Plug card into your unit- itll download your update and then you can pull your card out and use the Navionics chip. If your unit is new then updates should be a non issue. If you fish superteams Id be happy to show you both cards in a unit you can look at for awhile as I cant catch any fish with or without them. Usually I bring my boat as a backup for tournaments and itll be at Greers for the next event.C.O.D. Jr. III
I recently found a card called an Ultra II. It looks and functions like a SD card but it also has a little hinged flap that folds over and allows it to be plugged into a USB port. Pretty cool. No SD card reader needed. It cost around $13 and has a 512MB capacity.
Youre welcome and it never bothers me to talk about mapping. I sorta have a passion for it if you cant tell. lreddmann…the mapping will never take the place of eyeballing it for driving. It should just be a general reference and thats all. I have seen even the FHS maps be off as much as 50 feet or more on boat lanes on Toledo Bend; and when a boat lane is only 30 feet wide that can be a dangerous thing. DekeDeke
Went ahead and order the 07 Hot Maps for $50. Thanks all for the input. Ward, when you gonna be in Greers Ferry, I was up there last weekend, my dad has a place up there close to Shiloh, where do most guys put in Devils Fork. -Lee
Will try to come up this Friday morning for a half day before I have to be back to work by 1:00 in LR, Then will be there the next Friday all day practicing Then will donate to Team Davis on Sunday. If you wanna look at either card Ill launch at Shiloh likely.C.O.D. Jr. III
Ward- I looked at Shiloh and couldnt find a launching ramp with the exception of the one by the swimming area which it didnt look like there was a lot of parking. After looking at it on the map, I think the big ramp was actually closed off. Do you take a left when you enter, go by all of the slips and it is on your left? Dont know if I will make it up on Friday. Things are getting a little busy for me around here. What area do you find productive on the lake. I was familiar with the Hill Creek area when I was younger but never fished it. Since my dad has a place up there, I will probably find myself going up there quite a bit more. -Lee
Another question, if I have a digital camera that uses a sd card, couldnt I just use the camera instead of buying a usb/sd card adapter? Thanks. -Lee
