Margay 150 4 -stroke Prop Update

Ive had a few guys want to have an update on how my 2016 Margay with a Mercury 150 4-stroke is handling with my new to me prop. I purchased a 23p A45 Tempest prop over the winter and had it reworked as it had some dings. Weather finally allowed me to put together a solid run on sunday morning. I Had 2 guys (475lbs), normal rods and equipment load, just over 3/4 tank fuel, and of course a 80lb (24v) fortrex up front. We ran 55.4 mph and were turning 5100 rpm. This is giving me only a 4-5% pro slip, so dont think I can really get better on that part. Im guessing if my fuel tank was down to a 1/4 or so I could muster up another 1-2 mph… solo I think 62-63 mph is attainable with this prop. Now my only concern may be tourney loaded with full livewells. Luckily in Iowa most the lakes are 1,000 acres or less and with the gas sipping 4 stroke I can run these tourneys with only a 1/4-3/8 tank fairly easily. So livewells full may not affect that much if I have lower fuel levels.As a reference, I was getting a similar top speed of 55.0 mph with the fury prop, BUT was running under a 1/4 tank with the other conditions the same as above. Again, If I were down to a 1/4 tank or little less with the new 23p Tempest prop, I think i could acheive an extra 1-2 mph and actually see a decent gain in my top speed.Ill try to post more on top speed with just one person in the boat sometime this spring when I have a chance.Jared

Thanks for posting, Jared. How was the bow lift and midrange acceleration compared to the Fury? How about the holeshot? I have a 24p Signature SL4 four blade prop on order that was recommended by a Margay owner who posts on Bass Boat Central. He said it carries a load much better than the Fury. He has tried five or six differnt props and this one, though not the fastest, is by far the best handling prop on his Margay. Brian Lacoste of Holeshot Propellers is adding four one inch vent holes. I should get it next week. Ill let you know how it performs.

Basspack-Holeshot a little sluggish with 2 people and a little slow up to the 37-38mph area, then as it gets air under it and you trim out it barrels right up to 50-51. Then the steady climp up to 55 zone from there. Bow lift seemed good with it. I may try it an 1/8″ higher or lower and see if I dont gain a tish bit more that way too… Jared

I Wonder if anyone has tried a Fury 4 on a Margay? Bass Cat whats your thought on one?

Could any one tell me how many gallons the live holds on a margay? Jared I think there is a big difference in 150 4s vs 150 2s with weight in the boat. That is a big drop in speed. The 2s just has more torque to lift the the boat with a heavy load. With a light load they are close in performance.

They arent large like the triangle wells. They re about the same size as a Ranger Z520cin capacity.

So you think they are 31 gallon livewells. That is 31 x 8 pounds = 240 pounds of extra weight. Would a prop that is good at lifting the stern of the boat be a better choose for a loaded boat? Not sure why a trophy prop wouldnt be a good choose.
