Margay help/advice

I plan on picking up a new Margay this Sunday. It is one of the prize boats. I plan on stopping on my way home to look at an engine to put on it. It is a 2002 mercury/nitro 150hp. The seller says if I buy it he will help me bolt it to my transom as he has the equipment. How do I determine how high to attach it? Are they any tricks/issues/gotchas I should be aware of?Could someone recommend an inexpensive transom saver?

Hummm….. on my 100hp motor I have several holes to choose from. Are there only 1 set at 150hp?

You will need to get specific advice about the height of the motor relative to the pad OR the specific mounting holes to use.There is also a sealant that must be used around the holes and on the shanks of the bolts, specific engine mounting hardware that if not used, will cause you problems, and specific torque specifications for the hardware.If the hardware he has to bolt the motor on initially is not the correct hardware, you can always swap that later but the sealing must be done right the first time or the motor will have to be removed again. The hardware requires stainless steel bolts of the proper length for your transom, brass Nyloc nuts, and special hardened washers for the motor side. Look for your motor on the European Marine web site and youll find the hardware. Again, if its not the correct stuff right now, install it and swap the hardware later.There are two 3M Marine Sealants that are recommended for the bolt holes and the shanks of the bolts. I cannot remember the numbers of the two choices. Sorry.

Its a brand new boat and trailer. Personally, I would find a way to get a new motor mounted and set up by a Bass Cat dealer if at all possible. I think in the long run you will have more satisfaction with the boat. If it was an older hull I would be all for getting an older motor and bolting it on myself.

Have you priced used boats lately? People want crazy amounts for them. I can do this for about the same price as a used boat…… but it is a new boat. I looked at a 1999 ranger r73 that was 13.5k. This wont be much more but it will be new. In the mean time Ill be saving my pennies to get the new motor. So any height or transom saver advice?
