I would like to here what everyone is running for set ups on their margays with 150hps. I have a 150pro xs with a 25 tempest plus and I dont feel the boat is reaching enough rpms, I just put on an ultrex and the boat wont lift as well even with added cup. I am thinking of a 23 or 24 pitch tempest plus but also want to here if anyone is running a fury or a trophy and what their experiences are. I have a buddy who just ordered a sabre FTD with a 150 pro xs and the dealer ordered a 23 pitch tempest plus. I realize the sabre is a totally different hull I just feel like a 25 pitch wheel is a little tall for my boat and a 150. I never see any margay set ups on here and would love to see what is working for other people.
25 doesnt seem out of place. Im not sure how comparable the hills are between the margay and the old Caracal (172″) Our family has an 85 Caracal with a 150 on it. We have run a 25 since it was new. No problems. The ol 3 blade laser would top her out at 72. We currently run a 25 trophy. Excellent hole shot but top end suffered as it runs 63 now. I dont think youre wrong sticking with a 25, you might just need to find the right setup. Im not too familiar with newer props but Im sure someone will chime in and give you some insight. I have a 24 tempest plus now that a local prop shop worked. It had a 25 on it when I got it and was getting about 5500 rpm now Im 56-5700 usually on the higher end of that. Motorguide, 4 batteries, power pole and 2 people and Im far from good at driving it. Hope that helps.
Ricochet,What top speed are you getting with 2 guys? Have you played with the jackplate at all? Its like my boat loaded hits a wall at 59mph, if I trim any higher to get more lift the boat starts to chine real bad. Now maybe thats just what it is and to get that last 3-5mph out of it I need to drive through the chine, I am sure the hull is very weight sensative but I feel like this loaded even with the ultrex should be a 63-65mph boat.
The issue is the ultrex. They look very cool – but, theyre very heavy in exactly the area you dont want to add weight. Kinda like strapping on a pair of PPs and wondering why the holeshot died.
I agree the 20 pounds extra up front doesnt help but the boat only lost about half an mph after installation and for that motor it is well worth the sacrifice. I know that there might be some tweaks I can make to the jackplate but I have never touched any of that stuff. It seems with the margay there just arnt a lot of owners that care about maximizing their set up. When was the last time you saw a post if ever on someone talking about jackplate height on the margay and what worked for them, plenty on the sabre and the other boats but the hulls are pretty different. I have seen plenty of margays come out of the factory with the fortrex and I dont think there is that much of a difference from that motor to the ultrex I guess just wondering if any of those guys are running over 60 loaded with two guys. At the end of the day the boat is wonderful whether 59 or 63 im just curious if I have the right prop and jackplate settings.
I’ll be picking up mine this Friday, going to see it today! And once I’ve got it I’ll be trying to get it dialed in as best as possible. I’ve got an Ultrex up front and an Evinrude G2 150 HO. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
63 and some change on GPS. Forgot to mention 150 pro xs usually half a tank of fuel or a little over. Feel like more is possible if I could drive better. Dont get a chance to work on that much almost always have a 2nd person and everyone that goes with me hates going over about 40. Jack plate is where it came havent moved it.
25 pitch is a tough pull for most any 150 unless youre running very light. Fury really isnt a bow lifter and the extra 20# on the nose would probably be a bad fit if lift is now an issue. The fury runs like an inch stiff and I think youll be in the same place as the 25 now. I dont run the Margay – but, Id tend to think the 23 Tempest would be a better fit. Its a great bow lifter and likes to run high. If you get into the limiter – get a prop guy to bump the pitch to 24″. Youll still have the root pitch of the 23 for holeshot and the extra stretch of the blades to make speed. The 23 Tempest is a great prop, very consistent, and has better cup design than the 24.
That is kind of my thought process that a 23 is where I need to be on this boat especially with a load. Thanks for your thoughts on this.
