Was out on the water, motor (1998 200hp Mariner) was running great all morning. At one point I went to move, I started the outboard up and went to put it in forward and nothing….the motor just revved. I put it in TO reverse and reverse works fine. I pulled off the cowling and noticed that when I put it in forward the control arm on the outboard does not move, it only moves when I put it in reverse. This is where IT really gets strange…..now even when I put it in to forward gear it goes in to reverse, even in neutral its in reverse. The prop is not spinning freely by hand, its locked as if it is in gear. Could this be one of the cables? Could it be the lower unit (I hope not)? Anyone know how to check for these things? I have not hit anything with the outboard. Thanks!

It sound like a broken cable and the newer ones are much higher quality than the old ones that were in it. Try getting either Premium or Platinum cables if that is what it is. You also may have the control box arm popped loose inside the box.

Thanks for the quick reply…..Ill check the cable and inside the control box. I was able to move the piston under the cowling by hand and now the prop spins freely.

Anyone know how to remove the control box? Im trying to loosen up the bolts but getting to them is very difficult.

You have the control handle off? If so then the access plate is a cover plate that hides the screw heads.

No, I dont have the handle off……thats the part Im stuck on. There must be a simple trick to getting the handle off. It seems like it would be smooth sailing after that. Thanks!

Look for the key (Allen) screw head under the handle. Then it should be explanatory.
