For the second time in less than a year the seal @ the prop shaft has failed. There wasnt any line wrapped around the shaft. Has Mercury had any issues with these seals? This is the second Merc Ive owned in 8 years, and have never had this problem before last year. The motor is an 05 225 pro xs. Thanks

There is not a seal issue on Pro XS TM cases, and it is possible that the line was there and disintegrated from the shaft wearing it out. It is also possible the replaced seal had an error on either the install or the seal. BCB

Have your dealer/mechanic check your prop shaft closely. It may be the cause of the seal failure (If bent or grooved).~Misty~ EKs Marine Service West Monroe, LA

Are these seal failures common or am i just having a run of bad luck? Luckily the problem was caught both times before running the motor with no oil in the lower unit. Thnaks for the feed back

It is just a run of bad luck on this one for you… We do think it was probably a cord or line in both instances, though you found no left over evidence of such.
