My tach started acting up after a long run in rough water last time out. I am going to investigate further (check for loose connections ect.) tomorrow but a mech I talked to said the tach may be going out. My question for here is are these available through BCB and how difficult are they to replace? I looked in parts but all they showed was a full dash replacement and I am thinking about selling this Cat and upgrading after the TXBCOE next month so I dont want to go that deep. Thanks, Bill

The question becomes voltage, as to whether it is a tach or other issue. Check the voltage and see if that is jumping up to above 14 volts. Then it possibly is not a tach. We dont know if there are any VDO tachometers left in stock, however that is what they need to find for you.

What do you mean by acting up?On two different occasions I had issues with my tach on 98 Pantera II. First time it was a voltage regulator and the other time it was the pulse setting on the tach.

Ive had issues with my tach from time to time. Heres what Ive done:1. Clean your starting battery connections. The tach runs off the alternator pulses and battery corrosion will cause issues. Clean the connections squeaky, slather with Vaseline or protector and reconnect.2. I remove the tach cause its easier. When youre looking at the back of the tach – note the number that the potentiometer is facing. I think it will be on “6”. Take a flat bladed screwdriver and rotate the pot screw back and forth a few times 30 degrees or so – then re-align the indicator arrow with the number as it was. Button it back up. The potentiometer and dial contacts will corrode and cause a crazy tach.If both of those “fixes” dont take care of it – the tachs gone south. On two different boats – these two things have always corrected the tach issues for me.

It most frequently is the voltage regulator on this engine.

Thanks for all the help, mech diagnosed it a bad regulator. Voltage output was low and one regulator was hot to the touch. He says there are two of them and they run about $200 each heres hoping only one is bad. My gas gauge quit also so we are fixing that too. I better win some money at the TXBCOT (yea like thats ever going to happen I have must donator tattooed on my forehead)
