I have as stated a 200 efi 2.5 on a pantera classic 2002 model 25 pitch trophy plus i am running 6000 rpms on the nose half tank gas not over loaded on tackle i hear these guys talking about doing 73-75 in these boats what am i doing wrong can i turn more rpms i dont know what they red line at or where your flirting with danger im just curious my jackplate is about 1/4″ above flush i welcom any insight
The problem you will have with the 2.5L is lowend torque as opposed to a 3.0L. The 2.5 will handle a 25 trophy on top and maybe a little bigger, but will suffer on holeshot as the weight goes up. I had a 99 classic with a 2.5l and ran a 25 trophy to 5600+ but it was slow on holeshot with two guys and water in livewells. It would run 67-70 depending on weight and air temp. I currently have a 04 p4 with a 3L 200 and it swings a 26 fury or a 27 trophy with no trouble even with a full load. It runs 68 -74 depending on load max rpm is 5600-5700 with a lite load. You might try and borrow a 24 and 25 fury to run. The 25 might b good in that the fury has a much better holeshot compared to the trophy in my experience while maybe dropping your rpm on top a little as well as gain you a bit more mph. The 24 fury will probably run close to the same on top as your 25 trophy but will scream on holeshot! You want to be careful loading the boat on the trailer with a fury as it will want to jump in the back of the truck compared to the trophy. The fury may also be a bit more of a handful to drive on the topend compared to the trophy.Last edited by gasaxe on September 22nd, 2011, 2:15 am, edited 1 time in total.
The 25″ Trophy was my preferred prop on my Classic with my 2.5 liter 200. It had a decent hole shot, excellent mid range and very good on top. In stock form it would regularly run 74-75 mph when fishing alone with all my tackle. If you are in fact turning 6000 rpms you should be running in the low 70s. However it is possible that your Tach is off slightly. Its not out of the norm for a tach to read a couple hundred rpms off. As far as the rpm limits on the 2.5 liters, the book says 5800 but I never hit a rev limiter on mine and routinely turned it to 6200 rpms with no mechanical issues. Thats about as high as I would want to go on the rpms. That small block loves to spin up. The engine height is a trial and error deal. You dont sound like you are high. If you dont have alot of tourque on the wheel you can probably come up 1/4 inch. With my Trophy, I had my manual plate right at 1/2″ above flush. Thats where it liked to be. As BCB states regularly, your engine height should be determined by the tourque on the wheel. If you get to a height where you start getting alot of tourque on the wheel then you should stop and drop it a tad. Good luck and I hope this helps a little. Although I know its pretty basic information. I have very limited experience with the Furys so I cant offer an intelligent opinion on how it will perform. Thanks for the info i was just curious for the safety of my motor, but my hole-shot is not a problem we have shotgun strts in our night tournys and i am good ways in front for a short while i was just wondering if maybe i wasnt pushing it hard enough at 6k rpms or something i just couldnt see getting another 3-5 mph out of it without running more rpms and i know 6k is quite a bit but this is my first mercury so i didnt know and i have smart craft gauges so i imagine they are accurate maybe these guys go by speedometer and not gps
?
The gauges are accurate if they are connected to the GPS, as for engine functions they will be spot on.
I am with Chris 6200 is good on a 2.5
