I have a Mercury 250 Pro Xs on my 2012 Eyra. The # 3 piston is scored as determined by the local Mercury dealer. Mercury will not honor the extended warranty even though the diagnostics showed zero faults/codes. The rest of the engine is in good condition with a years warranty remaining. I intend to replace it with a 2016 model. Make me an offer if interested in motor for spare parts/rebuild.
Sir, Im on my 4th. Mercury high horsepower, two 225s EFI, 250 xs Racing, and my present 250 Pro Xs. No issues. Insofar as Mercury being slow on parts for warranty, one reason may be the dealers most likly didnt have the parts in stock, they dont know when one breaks down. Im not a Pro-staff for Mercury but they have been a rather good motor. The 250xs Racing was my favorite. Good Luck, Chuck
The merc racing division motors have a sound unlike any other outboard made. I particularly miss the old 2.5 racing motors that ran 7500 RPM and higher.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
Pro XS is not the XS series, which is a Racing Division engine.
I have a 2007 Pro XS on an R boat (ONYL UNTIL SPRING). I had problems with the motor burning up the alternator (5 to be exact). No one at Merc or the dealer(s) could figure it out. Mercury replaced the motor. Took a little time for them to get to that point, but they stood behind it. That is the 4th Merc I have had and the only time I have ever had a problem.
I have the 225 pro xs but friend of mine has had 3 250 pro xs and he loves them they were good on gas and plenty fast. No reliability issues at all with his.
The Pro Xs in not in the Xs Racing series?!?! Boy youre right on top of things! Chuck
Mercury Optimax is as reliable as the other two manufacturers if not more reliable. Their direct fuel injection engine has been on the market for over 10 years now. The other two not even close to that. Parts………………it depends on what the problem is. I can tell you though that any manufacturer where it be outboard motors or widgets are not carrying many spare parts on the shelves like they use too. Just the way its been for the last several years to save money. Get the Mercury powered Cat and youll never have look back!
The Pro XS was designed as a “consumer motor” with the usual warranty and such. Ive only owned one new 2.5 (280 hp a “tad” under-rated) and it came with a “you buy it, it is yours” sort of deal, although mercury did fix a couple of electrical/electronic glitches no questions asked. We ran it on an STV racing hull, but hung it on the back of an Allison XB a family member bought (hull only, mid 90s manufacturing date). Thing would break 100 without breaking a sweat. Was too finiky to use as a fishing motor however, but he wanted to see how his ally hull would run and I had the motor in my basement. Those were simply good motors. Incredible torque, 400 pounds soaking wet, would wind like there was no tomorrow. However, theres a lot to be said for todays DFI motors also. Particularly with respect to fuel. My 2.5 burned over 35 gallons per hour wide open, around 7800 RPM. Today that would be a giant pain in the wallet.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
Does .78 Gallons per minute sound familiar?
Question; Why would you stay with mercury after they stiffed you like that? If it has a year warranty left on it and they wont honor it??????? the warranty aint worth the paper its written on. Time to get a lawyer???……Mike
Good question. I had my house built with a drive thru garage that fits my boat so closely I dont have the extra 4 inches that yamaha requires, and thats the only other engine I would run. I am still steamed that they would not honor the warranty and thought seriously about going to an attorney. The original factory warranty covers about every thing, but the extended warranty leaves a lot of stuff out; things like injectors. Marine Max diagnosed the problem as a lean fuel mixture caused by an injector and swore by it. It would be a difficult case to win in court and then Id be stuck with legal bills on top of everything else. My only mistake was taking the motor to them.Having said all that, I will continue to fish and would rather swallow hard and buy another Mercury than build another garage. I did buy an extra 2 years Platinum warranty, which covers everything like the factory warranty, with the new motor. From my experience, if Mercury wants to deny the golden extended warranty thay will and get away with it. Rumors indicate that its happening a lot more often. Its going to cist them customers in the long run.
had a similar situation here in NC and the attorney general was contacted and then the manufacture. Next thing you know, motor was getting fixed without expense to the owner. Hope it helps.
Thanks. Ill give it a shot. Nothing to lose at this point
