They are the same oil. The difference is the Merc labeled oil can only be purchased at authorized dealers where you can by the Quicksilver oil at Walmart etc.

I have a question about oil. I have a 2006 150 Optimax on my boat I just purchased, do I have to run a special oil in that engine or can I use the Premium Plus oil?

As was said, Premium Plus oil from the dealer is in a black jug, from retail outlets like Bass Pro, it is in the Gray jug. Both are labeled Premium Plus. Premium Plus oil is the preferred oil for the 250 Pro XS. As to the 150 Optimax, Im not sure–Your manual will tell you for sure, but my guess is that it will be the DFI OIL, not Premium Plus. Check your manual to be sure.

Just checked the Mercury Website. I was correct–DFI oil is specified for the 150 Optimax 2.5 liter engine. Mike Whitten

Premium Plus is acceptable for an OptiMax and does not effect the warranty. Academy Sports and Bass Pro are 19.99 a gallon in Tennessee.

Is there any difference between the Mercury Premium Plus in the black jug and the Quicksilver Premium Plus in the grey jug? I have had a dealer tell me they were the same oil and both were what you should run in a 250 ProXS. Anybody know for sure?

I get mine from local dealer in bulk supply, not quite $30.00 a gallon.

the local dealer has bulk at 30.00 . academy has been at22.95, premium is 19.95, dfi 36.95. dont like local mercury dealer anyway .

Premium Plus is suitable BUT Optimax DFI is the preferred oil. You can mix them if you find yourself in that position.RH
