Mercury Pro XS ?

When was the last time the water pump (impeller) was changed. In theroy you should get water peeing out the back of the engine wihin the first few seconds of operation, 10 seconds is beginning to get a little on the long side. I just replaced mine and ran it the day before i change it out, it took exactly 13 seconds before it started to “pee”. After changing the impeller it now takes about 2-4 seconds before water is coming out the outlet.

Its probably okay for now, but as you say, its better to be safe than sorry. Mine was pumping water just fine, never had changed the impeller on the engine, but I had Sherm put a new impeller in this spring. Not very expensive when you consider the price of the engine.

Sorry to step in on a going thread.This is correct on your engine-XR6, it must come up to temp and allow the t-stats to open before you will notice a pee stream, sometimes may even take up to a few minutes in cold temps. The newer DFI engines and the way their designed have a different concept for cooling and water pressure.
