Topic: Minkota trolling motor problems. Help!

Last weekend we had a tournament on the Angelina. Sunday it started to rain on us and my trolling motor began to act up. It would work on second then when you went to step on the button again it would not work at all. It kept doing this throughout the tourney until it just stopped working all together an hour before weigh in. When it would work, it would work fine. We got the boat back the the house and did some investigation took the top and foot pedal apart and everything seemed to be intact. Put it back together hit the button again and noticed that the top red arrow would light up but the blade would not spin. Does anyone know what the problem may be and if an amateur electrician like myself an tackle the job.

Which Minn Kota would be my first question . — If it is a 5 speed unit I would look to the foot switch being contaminated with water , or worn out . — The variable speed units use a magnetic proximity switch , which will not be affected by water or wear , so I would look deeper into the possibility of a speed control / circuit board problem . — When mine went bad the motor would start to turn and just stop after about 1/8 revolution of the prop . — ( Maxxum 101 lb. ) — Hope this helps you out . — Hoss

My armature got wet in my Minn Kota. It would work sometimes and not others. When it worked, it worked normal. This was on my last boat. They told me I should removed my prop periodically and check for fishing line. Britt

If you press the button and spin the prop with your hand and it starts working then it is a bad armature. Takes about 5 minutes to change.
