My TM will stop running unexpectedly, and usually at the worst time. I have a Minn Kota Maxxum. At First, I could plug it in a bit deeper and that would work, but not any longer. I pulled the face off and found a semi-loose ground, after re-connecting, it worked for awhile then off again. I thought about replacing both male and female parts of the plug-in. But, Im afraid the problem may be more involved. I have noticed lately when I turn my big motor on, it will kill the power to my Lowrance unit. Today, when ever I started my big motor, it seemed to re-set my TM to a working condition. This evening, I noticed when I pushed the foot peddle switch, the arrow on top of the TM would light up, but the TM would not turn on. Any ideas on potential electrical gremlins all the way through my boat? Where should I start trouble shooting?
I am sure someone else will chime in on this but I have seen almost everything with the Minn-Kota. Next time it doesnt work, bang the head hard and see if it works. Really, try it. The fact that it works after running the big motor may be because of the motion of stowing then deploying motor doing the banging I told you to do. If that is the case, you have either a bad armature or board. Get it to a service center and let them diagnose which. You must have more than one issue as the electrical systems are completely separate, unless you have your cranking battery as one of your trolling motor batteries. If you are using your cranking battery as a trolling motor battery, it could be a bad battery causing the both problems. The symptoms on the trolling motor sound familiar and the shutting off of the Lowrance sounds like a weak cranking battery.Bill Spence St. Albans, VT billspence@yahoo.com http://www.twinstatebassin.com Bass Cat Boats http://www.basscat.com Vexilar Marine Electronics http://www.vexilar.com
The only simple issue we can relate to the cranking battery and not working or indicator light is battery terminals being loose. We really feel that trolling motors are the most underdeveloped item we deal with today on bass boats. They concern themselves with saving money and keeping the price low. Though todays trollers are now half the price people are willing to spend for an electronics unit (LCR). We see trollers evolving more as well as battery systems.
More than likely the armnature in the TM has a dead spot. If/when it does it spin the TM prop just a hair and if it works then that is the problem. Minn Kota has updated armatures to repair this defect. Ive had mine replaced twice. The last time it got the newer armature and hasnt had a problem in several months. What year is the TM? It has a 3yr warranty and this will be covered. I do not think the Lowrance turning off on start up is connected to this issue. Several of us have had this issue and Bass Cat has been looking into it I think. I replaced my starting battery the other day and have not had a problem in the last two outings. Hope this helps
Im going to check on the armature. Is that something I can do myself, or do I have to take it in? My TM is a 2006 model. Where would a fella find this thing on the motor, and how hard is it to get to it? I think that sounds like it may be the deal b/c when the big motor was cranked, I had the TM still in the water. So as I would idle, Im sure the blade on the TM turned and then bingo. Once, I had it on 100% continuous and it was turned hard right. I started moving and then my boat made a sharp turn to the right. It took a second for me to figure out what was going on. Thanks for all the help!
Sounds like armature problems. A 2006 should be still under waranty if youre the original purchaser. An ASC will take care of it. JohnJones Trolling Motor Services870 773 3474Motorguide/MinnKota/PowerPole/Lowrance/Humminbird
I just put a new X-27 on mine and its doing the same thing. I called the factory and they said to make sure the unit is getting 12 volts. The voltage that the unit shows on its screen is only 10.2 ish, so Im thinking that when I crank the big engine, theres a slight drop in voltage, thus turning the unit off. Im just starting to dig into this problem, so if you find something before I do, please do post it. Ill do the same. Rod
Bassnrod, The new color graphs draw alot of power. Dim your screen and you should see the voltage come up. What does it read after dimmed. Could be a current (amp) problem instead of voltage. Check all connections, even make sure the batt terminals are clean. Hope this helps Sheff
I would just recommend getting a motorguide.
