Ive been having issues with moisture getting into my compartments while fishing in the rain and also while the boat is covered. Main compartments this is happening to is both rod boxes, main storage box on front deck, and under both seats (I have a 2012 puma ftd). I have noticed that there is nothing to prevent water from draining into the rod compartments from the front of the boat and the cup holder up front (next to trolling motor) obviously drains into the passenger side box. Im guessing the water coming into the driver side box is from the two drain plugs up at the trolling motor pedal. Is there a location at the back of the rod boxes where a hole can be drilled to allow the water to escape? This is preventing me from storing much on the driver side other than a few rod combos, flare kit, fire extinguisher, aft running light and extra life jacket. Water pools up in both rod boxes and the only way I can get it out is to sop it up with a towel. As for the main storage box on the front deck, I have no idea how water is getting in there, but Ive had to take my tackle boxes out on multiple occasions to let them dry out. The storage under the seats is also getting moisture in them. I had a set of tools in there that are now no longer any good as they have rusted up. I keep my ropes in their since it doesnt really matter if they get wet, but other than that its currently wasted space. Im assuming water just seeps through the seats. Can I drill holes in those compartments? Also, can I drill a hole in the dry storage/day box next to the cooler? My aurora cover has begun letting water in as I have noticed the carpet on the front deck and floor under the consoles is wet when I remove the cover after it rains. I will be ordering a new aqualon cover soon. Hopefully this will alleviate some of the problems.
I open all of my compartments after fishing in any type of rain, havent had any issues. My son noticed some moisture after fishing in the rain all day but I just left the doors open. I do keep my boat stored inside, is yours stored outside? Last edited by C130 on March 29th, 2017, 10:05 pm, edited 1 time in total.
Water doesnt drain from the drain plugs in the trolling motor pedal well, that drains into the hull and down into the bilge. About the only thing you can do for your rod locker and the other compartment is to put paper in the compartment, then hose down the deck with the lids closed. Then look in the compartment and see where the water drops are hitting the paper. Brown paper sacks laid flat are good to use for this. Sounds like in all of your cases the black rubber seals around the compartment are leaking. Probably the same thing with the storage area under your seats.
We are going to suggest a dealership visit or tightening the latches and seals before water testing. The link on how to test is in the FAQ section.
Take a 5gallon bucket full of water. Dump it into the trollingmotor well. Then watch a what happens. From there go to lids. Itll either be a latch or gasket.

When I open the rod boxes, after fishing in the rain or pulling it home in the rain or taking it to the car wash to spray it down, you can see the carpet is wet in the creases next to the middle storage boxes. Its clearly coming from the nose of the boat. My carpet all the way at the front of the rod boxes closest to the nose of the boat have started pealing back. Im guessing this is because the glue has repeatedly gotten wet and lost its adhesion.
As stated before the drains do not go into the boxes and it will probably be the gaskets or latches on the rod boxes, and the gaskets or clogged drain holes on the seats. also see if there is a bit of trash stuck to the underside of the rod box lids where the water drain grooves are molded into the boat.

Even capillary action wouldnt cause water to run up the crease like that. It would just soak into the entire carpet kinda like how jeans do when you walk in water. The wetness in the crease of the carpet shows the path of the flow of water. I wish I had a picture to better explain it, but the rod boxes are wet up under the front deck of the boat where there isnt a lid opening or box seal. I just installed a new trolling motor this week and when I pulled the trolling plug area off to access the nose of the boat to do the TM bolts I noticed a spot in the hull where there is a small depression (just above the nose hook) and a little bit of water was pooled up in it. If water is able to get in there then it can surely run down the sides and into the rod boxes. I know the cup holder next to the trolling motor just drains into the hull so I would imagine thats where most of the water is coming from that pools up into the passenger side box.
This should not be a trolling motor well drain issue on a 2012. It is more likely a rivet or screw loose and possibly a seal issue from the top edge, or securing the latches more tightly. The water in the sump does have the ability to jettison through the ballast and force itself under a good deal of pressure into the now and splash both directions also. If its pooling in that area it could be something in the drain. An access port under the foot pedal is protocol on helping figure the drain out. We try not to put access panels in all boats and regularly have to for RAM sn BalZout mounts on the bow.Last edited by Bass Cat Boats on March 31st, 2017, 3:34 am, edited 1 time in total.
