What company is the best to purchase extended warranty on an outboard.
What I would do is go to the shop that I planned to use if I had a problem and ask which they prefer.
We would go factory if you have that option. The First Protection seems to be a preferred aftermarket, though OEM Factory warranty is the best. More expensive also in most cases. Though aftermarket may benyour only option.

Short of that, I would go with the manufacturers warranty. Some after-market policies are only good in certain states, so read the fine-print carefully. Same applies to car warranties; not always honored universally.
Guys,My current Mercury extended warranty is the “Gold” version. I recently recieved a mailer that Mercury offers a “Platnium” version. Obviously Merc is looking for more money and I coudnt tell exactly the differences based on the mailer. Anybody have any ideas?John
The Gold or Silver versions are basically a power train warranty that does not cover electrical and a few other components. We dont know if this is printed on the Mercury Marine (.com) website or not, though that is the basic difference. We usually see catastrophic failure after the first bit. The cost of the plan to Platinum is not worth the risk for the electrical and uncovered failures.
The cost to upgrade the “free” promotion Gold to the Platinum is really fairly reasonable and probably worth the cost..The gold only really covers major components while the Platinum is more like the original factory warranty by covering electrical & ignition and so on… I would be happy to give you quote on the upgrade if interested.. It is best to purchase your warranty from the factory if at all possible. Many of these aftermarket warranties companies work like insurance companies. When you have motor problems, we, as dealers, cannot touch the motors until an “adjuster” comes out and looks at the problem. Then they can tell you what you can and cant do and, like insurance companies, many try to wiggle out of spending money. While we wait on an adjuster, that is more time that you are not on the water. Dealing directly with the engine manufacturers is a lot easier and effective. As far as Mercury goes, since they are giving you the extra two years of gold, upgrading to a platinum warranty is very cost effective. The gold covers major items such as powerhead repairs but does not cover many electrical and fuel components. The platinum covers everything (except preventative maintenance) and even gives you an allowance for on-the-water towing. I have a chart posted on my web site that shows the difference in the warranty coverages. You can view the chart here:Mercury Warranty ChartLet me know if you have any questions.
