Im running an 07 PII w/ 07 200 Optimax and right now Im 3.5″ below pad turning a 26 Trophy @ 5700. I ran a 27 Tempest and Im going to run it again before giving up on it here in a week or so. Im curious if 2.75″-3″ below sounds too high for my boat. I know my Sabre seemed to really like to run 3.5″-3.75″ depending on props, but this hull seems to like the motor a little higher. I was just wondering if BCB or someone who has really set one of these PIIs up could maybe let me know before hand so I would not waste my time. Another guy has my prop and is wanting to buy it from me, but I dont want to go through the trouble of getting it back from him if this sounds like it may be too high. I wish I would have run it this high when I had it on here, but I did not think it needed to be raised and after playing with the trophy I am running now it is up to 3.5″ and might could go up even more. Thanks if anyone can fill me in. I know all boats are not the same and it may be that I just have to get the prop back and try it.
We think the 27 Tempest would be too much for a loaded condition and suffer on the hole shot too much. BCB
Thanks BCB. I was not too thrilled about the holeshot myself under loaded condtions. I did not play with the prop very much when I had it on here. I could turn it around 5600 loaded, but this was with my prop down around 3.75″ below pad. I wish I would have ran the prop at around 3″ below pad when it was on here under a load to ease my mind and curiousity. The boat ran great on top end with 2 people half tank of gas and livewells empty, it would turn around 5700 and even got into the limiter a few times when I was by myself, but this was with water temps in the 40s and a good chop on the water.
I too have a question about engine height. I have a new P Classic with 200 Optimax and trophy plus 26. Boat starts chine walk well before WOT. Engine is at height set at factory and I think it is too low. What is the recommended engine height for this boat with a 200 Optimax? I generally fish alone and carry no more than 20 pounds in front compartment.
I have bumped it up to 3.25″ below pad and it has no steering torque and plenty of water pressure and seems to have less walking. The only problem I noticed the other day when I made my first run was it blew out bad on the holeshot. After my 1st stop I had fish in the livewell so it hooked up good from then on. I have a blowout ring and and medium plugs in my trophy and it still lost its bite on my first take off. I actually had to feather the gas to get it to hook back up and go.
Sounds like you need to either plug a couple of holes or go to a one size smaller vent. BCB
Bass Cat Boats are some of the easiest to set up out there. Raise the engine until you get a touch of steering torque and youll be at max potential. Then adjust for hole shot. If you adjust for hole shot and you get to a point where you have too much cavitation as it breaks over on plane, bogs down, or is just too slow for your desires then the only cure is a smaller pitched prop! You cant have it all most of the time. If you are experiencing chine walk, then more times than none you dont need to change a thing until you learn how to drive. Raising the engine will help the chine walk, but doesnt necessarily mean youre improving the boats performance. Usually the boat will be slower on the top end vs. that of the previous setting. Adjust for top end speed with rpms in the range of 5700 – 5900.
Is the “height” distance measured from the bottom of the pad to the top of the prop, or to the bottom of the cavitation plate? I could not get a good read looking at my 97 P2 last night but it looks to me like I have less than 2″ from the pad to the bottom of the cav plate. The boat runs good. A little sluggish out of the hole but that is a 2.5L 150 EFI Merc for you. 23P tropy+ two holes no plugs, opposing holes medium plugs. Top end is good. Ranger buddies swear that I am more than a 150 cause I walk away from them. I did what Phil said. Raised the motor until I felt steering torque. Did not worry about a measurement. You can tell when it hits the sweet spot.
The height is measured from the bottom of the pad to the centerline of the propshaft. Nothing is measured from the prop or the cavitation plate. That motor may stay sluggish out of the hole, but you might improve it some with using large plugs in the other two holes, or using no plugs at all.
