Couple of questions for someone in the know, and it aint me….The s2 headed screws commonly used on cats can be purchased where and what size are they when used to attach say a RAM mount to fiberglass? What size pilot hole is req to establish just the right amount of thread assuming these screws self tap the fiberglass?Any suggestions on making new holes and attaching a ram mount to fiberglass would be appreciated, I see where the prior owner attempted a similar install and the glass cracked in the vicinity of the hole. What is the best source for a 12v source near the front of an 09 puma ftd? I do not believe the current graph wiring(lowrance) offers a splice in spot and I am not sure what is behind the trolling motor outlet panel or how it is wired behind the TM panel, is it 36v behind there, 3 12 volt sources???Any help would be awesome, trying to do this correctly the first time.
The s2 headed screws commonly used on cats can be purchased where and what size are they when used to attach say a RAM mount to fiberglass?1: These are a custom made part you can not buy open market. You will have to order #2 square drive SS screws from BCB Parts if you want those. What size pilot hole is req to establish just the right amount of thread assuming these screws self tap the fiberglass?2: This will depend on the screw you intend on using. Any suggestions on making new holes and attaching a ram mount to fiberglass would be appreciated, I see where the prior owner attempted a similar install and the glass cracked in the vicinity of the hole.3: We like to chamfer the holes with a countersink and allow the screw to go into fiberglass and not gelcoat. This reduces crazing from the screw holes. What is the best source for a 12v source near the front of an 09 puma ftd? The Nav or ACC switch would be on the Master Power. Hope this helps!
I wanted to start using the square drive screws on my other boat, so I stocked up on various sizes and head types….found them here http://www.mcmaster.com/#tapping-screws/=5kk8a5 The McMaster site is great for searching, sorting, etc. Fast shipping too!Last edited by edwin on January 28th, 2010, 1:56 pm, edited 1 time in total.Advantages are taken, not handed out…
Thx for the help. Im not sure what size screw I am dealing with but it is used all over the boat from mounting the lowrance brackets to the coverplate over the transducer and power wiring, to an existing RAM mount installation, maybe and inch or so in length maybe sligtly shorter, I guess I am needing to know if the pilot hole needs to be almost the entire dia. of the screw or half or smaller or what. With the counter sink, do you need lots of speed or slow speed? The acc switch looks like a likely candidate but stupid (noob) question maybe, what is the ground source up front, I guess my meter will tell the tale, just looking for some insight into how these things are wired prior to digging in, what to expect etc etc. IE is it a common hot source and the switch is ground on both sides, or how does the switch complete the circuit. Thx in advance.
The pilot hole should be just a fidget larger than the actual straight shank, and the threads will bite then. You can not use the method of wood screws as the fiberglass is extremely tough and you will twist the head off the screw. Use a manual driver to be sure as the power drivers have no feeling of tension. The ACC switch is fine for the front end, and since it is lighted there should be a ground there to tap into also. There will only be one ground lead for the light and the ground is not switched. The positive is switched and you can simply put a lead onto that switch and plug and play, though you will have to have that switch on. Or you can tap the positive lead there.
thx so much, the install went smooth as hell and I was even able to cover some of the prior screw up.
