Recently purchased a new to me 2015 puma. Boat came with a brand new motor guide x5 in which I hate and really want to get a fortrex instead. Problem Im having is imafraid my cover wont fit if I swap tothe fortrex? True statement? Has anyone swapped to minn Kota and kept same cover or am I gonna have to swap covers as well? Its aurora strapless. Thanks!

I swapped TMs on my 09 from MG to a Fortrex and my cover would not fit properly. It was an Aurora, the older model, with straps. I have a new boat with the Sunbrella cover and it seems to be cut to fit my Fortrex 112.

You would need to send your cover to Aurora Canvas for an alteration. The trolling motor patterns will exchange, if you pull the side cover on the ForTrexx and bolt through these side panel holes they will line up to MotorGuide patterns.

What is it that you dont like about the X5? Everyone has a different preference, but I feel like mine performs better than my 2 previous Fortrexs.

Never owned a motorguide until now. One reason is it almost jerks you into the water while deploying it. The foot pedal is a squeaky flimsy. The steering tourque is horrible when running above 6. You have to step on it or jerk the crap out cord to get it to deploy. Just had a fortrex on my last boat and it was much more user friendly. I guess its all what you are used to

I have owned MK for 12 years until this year. If you add the shocks as sold on the parts page and the locking pin for the deck you will remove the need to step on it to deploy and the weight of it when you deploy it. The new x5 is so similar to Minn kota that its not funny. Just glad they kept the button on the right side of the foot pedal , still lays flat on tje bracket, and weighs half what a Minn kota does.

Ok maybe Ill try the add ons and see if they will help. Ive seen the shocks but what is the locking pin for the deck that you speak of?

Does the x5 head sit up higher? I dont like how my TR 82 wants to hit my reel handles… it rides so low to the deck.

The locking pin is made by T-H Marine, and its called the troll tamer if Im not mistaken. Its money well spent, not only for the ease of unlocking it to deploy, but it also protects the motor and mount from the wear and tear caused by running in rough water. Im really glad I got mine!
