I know the accepted and most common place to use a Ram mount is the first two pics. Is there any reason that I could not mount it on top of the console like in the last two pics? Id like to have it so that I could turn it around and see the gps up front. I have a good plate to use as a backing for mounting it. Just wondering if there is any real reason not to do it in that location. Im a tall feller and sitting there in the driveway it didnt seem to obscure my vision but even if it did, I could lower it while running. What do you guys think? Mine is mounted on top of the console but with the shortest arm I think it is about 3″ long
Would mounting to the outer right side of the console be an option?Seems like you would be able to rotate the unit in that location fairly easily while keeping your field of vision clear. … Unless youre not into the ram/unit being on the outside of the hull… I know some folks arent a fan of this.
I had seen several PIIs (I believe) that had Ram mounts directly behind the steering wheel and that looked distracting to me. I think off to the right side would be ok, and like I said it can be lowered for running purposes if it is in the line of sight too much. fishinjim…..I appreciate the thought but there is still a lot of timber in Toledo Bend and it likes to reach out and grab things.I may give up the idea of turning it around to be seen from the front of the boat and just start saving for another gps unit to put up front.Jim EbarbMany, LA (Toledo Bend Lake)2004 Cougar/ 225 OptimaxHumminbird Helix 12 Chirp SI on BalzOut Mount at bowLowrance HDS 7 at bowHumminbird Helix 12 Mega SI on Ram Mount at ConsoleLowrance HDS 8 in dash at console
If youd have shown at the G.A.F. it woulda done been mounted !!!!!
I had mine mounted like that on my 2008 Cougar. Worked great. I had the shortest arm available and I wrapped it with pipe insulation held on with cable ties to avoid rubbing. The unit (Vexilar Edge3) sat right on top of the in-dash unit and was minimally sight-restricting. Some people remove the pop out cleat and use those mounting holes to attach a bracket. There is a pretty informative post here on BBC. Link below http://www.bbcboards.net/zerothread?id= … 58#7181058

It came down to me and my toy or spending time with a beautiful young woman. Sorry but it wasnt that tough of a decision.
