Ive posted about a clunk when idling several times on here, and couldnt hardly describe what was actually happening. I adjusted gear cable several times and even praised a local dealership for what I thought was finally a fix…. But it would always show up again and continue to get worse. Took it to a shop yesterday and mechanic told me he would tear down lower unit and do a free diagnostic on what could be going on. Needless to say…. The news was bad today…. Lower Unit has to be rebuilt. Forward and reverse gears missing teeth pinion gear eat up, and metal chunks and debri everywhere…… So $1200.00 and Ill be fishing again!!!! Grrrrrrrr What else can go wrong???? Geeeeeshhhh!!!Does 1200.00 sound fair for a total rebuild with new bearings and seals and the gears?
Insurance company and a under water log sounds better with a new prop to boot ……………..lol
Prop is like new, so Im afraid that might be a hard sell? I really dont know how the insurance thing works on a boat….. Such as: if they send out appraisers etc.???
Ok, Let me ask it this way: is it common to use the Insurance on a lower unit going out. I cant honestly say Ive hit anything, but then again, I dont know that I didnt. It sure dont make sense that teeth just break off for no reason either. Whats yalls thoughts??
Im pretty sure that unless you have something like the lower unit coverage that Progressive offers, youd have to have hit something for it to be covered…2011 Sabre FTD w/ Mercury 150 Pro XS, Power Pole Sportsman 2s, Humminbird 898 w/ 360 and 858 at bow, 898 at ConsoleFor lots of BCB love, follow me on instagram: @professorbeard
Its up to what your mechanics says that the insurances company will buy or not! I had a #2 cylinder on a 95 merc go bad. insurance adjuster came out and said not covered . I complain they sent another out to look . He said premature parts failure and they covered a power head minus deductible. But lost my discounts on rates. but I had $ 4000 towards a new 200 hp merc. 2014 Puma FTD 250 XS

Insurance isnt called a warranty for a reason.Ward, I agree 200%. As a General Contractor for the last 34 years plus I see this all the time. It is like people have no morals when it comes to trying to cheat an insurance company and then these same people complain about premiums being high. Bottom line is insurance is NOT a Warranty! Dan
Ward, Mean…. Dead on the money with me!! Actually lower unit is supposedly new. Got receipts when bought boat, but… Really doesnt matter… If theres any question…. Rather have my character and integrity, than another brand new recond. lower unit anyway…. Discussion over far as Im concerned. Thanks Guys!!!
When I got my insurance thru Alfa (10 year old boat so, no warranty) they explained that the insurance would cover any mechanical failures. I asked twice, anything? “Yes anything”. So if my motor blows, insurance will cover the rebuild? “Yes.” No matter what the cause? “Yes” Lower unit blows? “Its covered”SO. Since Im paying for it, and they cover it, if something happens, Ill file a claim.13 PIV w/ 200 MercIG: WarriorRiverCustomRods
