Need a little help with setup 2007 Puma w/250 Pro XS

I got my first Bass Cat and need a little help. Its a 2007 Puma with a 250 Pro XS and manual jack plate. I am running a 27 Trophy prop and when coming out of the hole I have to trim it up fast or i get a lot of prop wash ( RPM jump till it lays down) and have to let up on the gas a little to get on plane. My question is do I maybe need to adjust the jack plate or is this normal. I had a 18 foot semi V aluminum boat with a 90 merc classic so i made a big jump and realize it will handle 100% diffrent.Thanks MikeLast edited by mjacobs on March 7th, 2012, 7:52 pm, edited 1 time in total.

I have the same year Puma and 250 ProXS. I had it 5 years this month and run a 26 Trophy with 2 holes pluged and 2 small hole plugs no blow out ring. If you blow out you need to lower the motor a little.

put a fury on it and you will never have a issue again.

+ 1 , 26 Fury + seat time + getting someone with experience to show you how to drive = euphoria !Be SAFE and take your time learning the new rig, it takes years to become a good driver. Im not there yet !

See if it blows out with the livewells full before you change anything. Ran a Trophy for years and it would always lose bite as the boat broke over to get on plane(empty) but was perfect when livewells were full. 80 mph boat so I know she was dialed in

Thanks for the advice. I will look into a 26 Fury prop and i will also fill the livewell up this weekend and see how it does. I have a friend that has a Puma also. I am trying to get him to go out with me to just ride around and have him explain the handleing to me. Thanks for the responses!!

This is an XS or a Pro XS engine? If it is an XS engine then propeller slip would mean you need a next size larger PVS plug in the propeller hub. Rigs bought used are at the mercy of the setup gods (expression)as we never know what they did before you got the rig. Used damaged prop that was cleaned upon a prop shop, by whomever we dont know? Sometimes they slip on a propeller that they did not run to sell a cleaner rig, which never was tuned to the rig? There are tremendous variables? This prop would run on about half the 250 XS combos and not on the other half. Try the PVS plugs and perhaps a vent ring on the hub. You could also be too high on th jack plate? First get the right height for top end performance, then start bringing the hole shot together by restricting the exhaust hub gasses.

Its a 250 Pro XS. I will also look at the PVS plugs. I am not sure about the vent ring. I will do a little research on it and see exactly what I have. Catch someone who knows more about it down at the Rock and you can learn from advice. Collier and a bunch more down there should be able to help if you catch them at the ramp.

Mjacobs, I know the past owner of your new boat very well. He is a little guy and always ran the rig with a very light load. He ran the plate higher than most. The boat would run good for him set up like this.His team partner was also a little guy. He caught a lot of fish with very few rods a very little tackle. He took very good care of the boat. It should make you a good boat for a long time. You have been offered some good suggestions on set up. I would first look at plate height.
