I guess you would call this a setup question but I would also like to get some verification of what I am being told. I have a 06 Classic DC with a 04 Merc 200 3.0L. This is a very specific question in regards to the motor. The motor is stamped 5500 Max RPMS I had asked everyone I could about max RPMS and they told me “dont worry you can turn it 5800 no problem” or “Just keep if off the revlimiter” which seems to be 5900 or so. Well my rig is now in the shop (Nothing broken) I just took it in because it did not seem to be running right. I have now been told that this motor will go into Guardian if it turns more than 5500 for more than 30 seconds. Not good because I have been of late turning about 5800 full tourney load (heavy (me) and heavier paratner) 70.5mph w/ 26 trophy @ 3.5″ below pad. I can live with but I am going to have to reduce some Rs and get back into 5400-5500 range. Which I know is going to kill my overall performance (go to taller pitch=kill my hole shot) keeping in mind Im running a big load 2 people = 625#. So short of a diet for me and my partner am I going to be able to get performance out of this motor @ 5400-5500 Rs? What are your toughts on prop/setup for this rig. It seems that this motor was more designed for salt water low end / mid range tourqe (odd because it is a short shaft motor). I may be way off base here but am going off of what I am told. Could someone verify this computer setup. I am also told that this motorola board cannot be flashed/reprogramed. If this is true anyone got a good 5800 RPM (for lack of a better term) computer for my motor they would like to part with? Sorry this was so long but kinda specific questions. Any input would be appriciated. Thanks in advance, Your humble student, Jay
Run it 5850 to the rev limiter, no problems. We did the original work on this engine and had one of them. Run it! It was made for Bass Applications and not salt water. The original engine was debuted at Bass Cat before it was introduced. BCB
Let it eat!!!! If it ever does get into the rev limiter you can swap to a Fury prop and keep top end performance and holeshot.
Ok Thanks guys. I was just a little concerned about the computer showing 3.9 hours running in guardian. They told me that it would adjust the timing and run too lean? I was worried if that is the case I would wash a cylinder eventually. It gains/loosed top end HP that you could only feel if you were running the boat. Some trips it just will not turn up above 5100 mainly on the first trip out. It just has not been right I will have them keep looking. Thanks Guys I really appreciate the info, J..
Not sure if I understood your first question. Are you saying that you currently are having engine problems and it wont run over 5100 rpms? Or are you running it full out and it is losing power once you get to 5800-5900 rpms? Not sure why youre showing 3.9 hours in guardian. You would know if it was running in guardian mode. Guardian mode will take it all the way down to about 3500 rpms or so. If youre running WOT all the way to Guardian mode, then you need to increase the size of the wheel youre turning. Sure youre going to lose some hole shot, but you cant have it all………………………….great hole shot/great top end speed. Most opt for a good holeshot/good top end speed. Others want top end speed/fair hole shot. You have to decide what you want. Personally I would not run mine in guardian mode if at all possible. With all being said, your tachometer could be off some and it too sounds like you have other issues here that are not fully comprehendable.
Phil, OK sorry for the confusion. I have had a few different issues. 1) a few times I have been limited to 5100 RPMs and it will only turn about 63 MPH on the first run but I have given it about 10 min of idol time. Then 2) after the first run the engine will turn up to 5800 Rs and about 70 MPH with full load but I can feel the HP pick up and drop not too noticable in the RPMs just in the seat of your pants mainly. I know sound a little vauge but its the best way I know how to explain it. The Guardian thing is what I am concerned about, how will I notice if its in Guardian is it the slight power loss I feel at WOT or is this when I can only get it to turn 5100. My shop is still going thru it and I am sure we will get it worked out but I really am trying to figure out where I have got all the Guardian hours and get it corrected because I agree not a good place to be. His opinion is when im over 5500 it was kicking in Guardian and he recommends Proping it out to 5400-5500. But this is the first I have ever heard running this motor WOT at less than 5800 or so. And he says this is the first time he has seen this motor with this computer in a freshwater application. I have never seen anything less than 5100 at WOT so I am confused about the Guardian. We are going to dyno it and check the Tach tomorrow. Oh yeah and I am staying out of the rev limiter I could beep it if I run empty but dont let it get there. Phil I appreciate the time. & I hope this makes a little more sense.
We did not see any reference to 5100 in the first post. The propping is not the issue, you have something in the electronics, probably stator that is limiting your RPMs. Though we would run it as is and try to let it get more inconsistent, then they can figure it out. They should be able to see if it is not performing on top with a laptop, and perhaps a DDT. Though they will need to check the stator and ignition. Something electrical is our guess. On the Guardian, we do not think so. We think it is something else, and the boat once ran with this propeller just fine we assume. The propeller did not change the way things are, so there is something else up. Process of elimination.
I agree that most if not all is an engine issue. Changed spark plugs lately?
I should know more today but I really appreciate you guys piping in. My motor was just put on this boat in January this year it was on a 90 PII before and I was turning about 5600 on that rig (with the same prop) I was just waiting on better water temp to prop it out and set it up. So yes process of emlimination will be in order. “patience young skywalker” As far as the plugs go I pulled them last week and took a look and they all look good. I replaced them last year and they have about 100 hours on them. BTW I agree there is something prob shorting in and out I just hope we can find it sooner than later. I just wish I understood all of the time shown in Guardian. We will reset the codes and see if/when that come back.
