Need Help–Any suggestions? Cougar FTD geting slower!!!

I have owned my 06 Cougar w/225HPDI since May 09, and have had trouble finding the right prop/height combination. In the summer I can turn a T1 25p to 5700 rpm and fullly, heavily loaded just under 70 mph. Now in winter with cooler water, fully loaded Im only getting 66. Even empty with just me only geting 69. I think the set up is right, prop shaft is just about even with bottom hull, based on water pressure, no chine walk when fullly trimmed, and a long sloping rooster tail. What intrigues me, is late last spring when I got it, the manual plate was 1″ lower and it had horrible walk, but it was running 73-74 mph. Do Cats run better when walking. Any help with this situation, as far as usual set ups would be greatly appreciated, because I am tired of Rangers out running me!!! Thanks in advance for your time and help. I cant wait to get a new one with the new Yamaha.

It sounds to me like you need to lower your jackplate and learn how to drive it this way. It is well known that the 20 Cats run better when the plate is lower. To get the most top end out of your rig, you will have a small learning curve handling the chime. If I can do it , anyone can….. Glynn

How much have you played with your jackplate? I had a yamaha 25M and it ran better low. I got it worked on and had to raise it nearly two inches. Im sure others here can help more but youre in the right place for solid advice. Good luck. Let us know how it goes.

We prefer the 25 M Pro Series and we like the engine to be lower. We do not think the 25T is a good wheel for a 225 Yamaha. It does sound like the engine being raised another inch (1″) from a premium performing set up of the past is a major error. We tell people here time and time again, keep em LOW! BCB

The reason its easier to drive with the engine higher the way your setup is now is because you arent getting the lift you need to really get that big hull up and running. You lower the plate, get more lift, more total hull out of the water therefore its harder to drive at WOT (until you learn how to and then it will be nothing. Cats are not hard boats to tame). It will run faster, your holeshot will more than likely be better, your fuel economy will increase and it will ride better in rough water if you lower your motor back down. I can say this with confidence because I was in your same frame of mind 9 years ago when I bought my cat. I wanted to run my motor as high as I could to get this super top end and then when I would put an honest fishing load in the boat it just wouldnt perform as expected. After quite a bit of coaxing from BCB and others here I listned and lowered my motor and have been happier with my rig ever since. Chris Coupel Paulina, La.Chris CoupelPaulina, La.

Thanks so much for the advice, headed to lake today w/ tools and a buddy and will lower plate and change props toa 25 m and play around. Thanks again, Kyle
