Need help with set up on 04 cougar

Hello all, I have a new to me 04 cougar with a 225 optimax of same year. What prop and pad setting would be recommended? Boat has a 6″ manual jackplate. When purchase it had a 25p tempest set at 3″ below pad. Could only get about 58 mph gps at 5500rpm. Did a little research on the BBC on what other owners with like rigs are running. I put a 26p trophy on at 2.5 below pad and got 64 gps at 5600rpm. This set up gave me a lot better bow lift. I Always have full tank of gas and one person. Others report easily hitting 70 and peaking out at mid 70s. Any suggestions or should I be content with that speed? Thank you for reading and or any suggestions.Rob

I have the same rig. Mine came with a 25 Trophy Plus (4 blade) and I was hitting the rev limiter with it. I changed to a 26 Trophy Plus and was doing better. I carry a heavy load and usually keep both tanks full. The fastest I ever hit was 73 on gps. The problem I had with the Trophy was that it was a beast to get the boat on the trailer. I decided to try a 25 Fury (3 blade). I like it overall. I lost a little on the top end. I can still hit 70 but rarely more. With my 03 cougar ftd with 225. I ran a 25 trophy and felt it was the best prop for me. Would only run 72-73 cool & light and mostly high 60s. I was around 3 – 3.25 below the pad and ran with the weed ring and all 4 medium pvs plugs. Loading on the trailer was a little weak. If you like the way the trophy handles like I did I would think a 24″ fury 4 would work for you.

Have a 2010 Cougar 225 Optimax (non-proXS). Run 25P Fury 8 inch JP. Hole shot and loading is awesome. Top out at 72.5 full load hitting rev limiter. P2P is at 3″ I think. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Thanks for all the quick responses. I think most cougars came with an 8″ plate, mine has a 6″. I think that may be playing a little factor as well. My biggest challenge is getting this thing on pad. I cannot seem to get it on pad unless i am atleast 5300 rpm and to do this I have to trim so high that my rooster tail is higher than my cowling by 2-3 feet.

The 26 trophy might be too much for your 225. Lowering pitch will increase the torque and lifting ability. Id also think you may be too high
