I am really debating on going to a 36v system on My 06 P4, I just cant see how 4 batteries are going to fit in the bilge with the saddle tanks installed, Does anyone have a pic of their set up on P4? I have seen it done in on the puma, but there is more room then what i have, so a pic of a pumas setup does not help me here. Can anyone help me out here. I have thought about running just the three battery setup but the CCAs required to run the optimax has me concerned if I run the batteries down.I would feel much better with 4 back there
The batteries can bridge the sump in the bilge. I only have 3 batteries in my P4 but have room for a 4th if I mounted my charger and Stealth unit on the transom. And I do have the saddle tanks and 3 gal oil tank back there too. The key I think would be to use the end-to-end dual battery R&R aluminum tray to bridge the sump. DekeDeke
JSLAW, We think if you get an AGM Exide 31 Series for your cranking battery, then you will be fine. And we have done some very (REALLY VERY) extensive testing lately. BCB
My main reason for not wanting to bridge the gap is I always want to have quick and easy acces to the pumps and dont see where i would have that if I cover them with the batteries. So i was wondering if it was possible. BCB- by going to that battery I would have to replace my others to a series 31 also, which may be fine, I would love to run just the three battery setup but am concerned after fighting current all day about having enough juice to start the optimax. I have a jumpstart pack but would rahter not carry that if i dont have to. I assume the testing was done based solely on the three battery setup and runing a 36V troller? I am assuming there were no major concerns and the motor cranked everytime?
To have all three on the AGM 31 series would help, though we just use a lot of power on our rigs while fishing, and the batteries we have are not quite enough. The larger and more durable AGMs are going to help if you want to invest in all three. The trolling batteries are seldom the issue, though they are where everyone focuses. The major problems are with the cranking batteries and we are just using them up. You could also just throw a short set of jumper cables in for emergency uses. BCB
Will the AGM 31 Exides fit in the current battery trays, or will they have to be upgraded too? The trays Im talking about are the ones on the parts page (http://www.basscatstore.com/index.asp?P … tom&ID=117). Thanks.
I am running a 36v system on 3 series 27 trolling batteries without any problems in 2 years. I have always been concerned however about the crack battery failing because it does not put out 1000cca to the 200 opti. Is there a problem running a 31 series just for the crank battery and 2 27 series for the other 2 ?
Had my cranking battery go bad last weekend. Would not start my boat at the ramp. Later determined it had a bad cell and was replaced, that part is OK. What did surprise me was that the trolling battery would not jump and start the boat either. At least in this case it doesnt seem that carrying a set of jumper cables would do any good. The trolllers are only 940cca but I would think they would do in a pinch.
The jumper cables or a connection is the issue most likely, not the amperage of the batteries. That is more than enough to jump or even use on that set up. We got by with 800 CCA for many years when Mercury was touting the 1000 cca batteries. Now we are aware of more issues than one would even think. So we are going to suggest several batteries next year to our dealers. Though again, that battery should have hopped it right off if it had been hot and the connections had been good. BCB
