need tires for trailer

New to the siteI just got a 92 pantera 2 with a tandom trailer. It has the orginal turbo-tech 205/70r/14 tires on it. I wanted to know if I could change the size to like a 215 or maybe 195 any help would be great!

Those older rigs had little clearance as we tried to keep the frames narrower. Odds are the 215 would work, though not 225. 195 would be smaller and probably be enough on a tandem.

I recently aquired a 94 PII. it was equipped with 205/70 series tires with the factory rims and still managed to rub a hole in the fenderwell. With the overall lack of clearance I have decided to stretch the axles by an additional 2 1/2″ to eliminate the problem all together. This will allow me to run 225/70 tires if I wish. I know my tires will extend past the fenderwell slightly, but I will live with it knowing I wont ruin a tire.

Thanks! should I stick with 70 series or could I go with something other then that?

A 215/75 series Goodyear Marathon is 8 1/2 inches wide at the sidewall. A 225/70 Firestone Indy 500 is 9 inches at the sidewall. A 75 series tire would give you a little more clearance. Without extending the axles, another option would be changing to rims with a greater offset to bring the tires out. However, the cost of new rims($500-$600) or modifying the axles ($100) is to be considered. I also looked at installing wheel spacers, but gaining only 7/16 to 1/2″ and also having to replace all the lug bolts, it still wasnt enough clearance for peace of mind. Im looking at gaining 1 1/4″ on each side by changing the axle length. More than enough clearance even with 225/70 tires. Besides, it gives it a wider, meaner stance.

Does a 97 year have the same width? My trailer seems pretty wide when traving some of those narrow winding Ozark roads.I still need to pick up a set of new white letter bling tires…

the series profile is the problem. the lower the number the wider the tire. stick with the 75 series to keep the tire thinner across the sidewall. although the tire will be taller and narrower it should give you the clearance you need. Remember that the fenderwells slope toward the tire. you may have marginal clearance sitting still, but a road bounce will cause the frame/fender to drop down possibly contacting the sidewall. just have to mount them and see what kind of clearance youve got. any tire shop can mount one up and place it on each hub to check it. as for me, since i have acesss to everything, im extending the axles.
