new cat owner and need help

I love the forum and how helpful everyone is. I am new to the cat family as I recently bought a 91 PII with a 200 merc and love it. It is a Cadillac compared to the old john boat with a tiller I had before lol. My problem is when I have it out and crank the throttle the back end sinks down and it runs with the nose up every so often it will come down but its not consistent. The motor at full throttle runs about 3000 rpm and if the nose comes down it runs about 4100 rpms. I just feel like I should be getting more consistency out of the ride and more rpms and more speed. I dont know how fast I run as I do not have a gps on the boat yet. Any help would be greatly appreciated Thanks,Billy

Are the gas tanks full? Be sure the motor is trimmed all the way down on take-Off. As the bow comes down, trim up until you reach the “right” combination of speed and trim. Which merc? At WOT you should get 5500-6000 RPM. What prop are you running? Where is the motor on the jack plate? I had a 1990 P2 w/ a 150 Johnson before. 2 guys, fuel, and full live wells made getting on plane a chore at times.

Trim down fully before taking off and once the nose drops over start trimming in small bump steps. From there You play with the trim based on how the throttle and performance at varying levels of steering feel to loosen the tension.

The problem is getting the nose to drop every time some times it does sometimes it doesnt. I will definately try trimming up as I go but how do I get the nose to come down?Billy

Trim down to the stops Press the throttle fully forwards and hold itAs the boat begins to plane and continue holding throttle fully forwardsNose will rise and fall over, Continue holding full throttle till it lies flatOnce it lies flat start slowly bumping the trim and ease back on the throttle to cruising speedAdjust Trim and Throttle to seek desired performance and driving comfort. When coming off plane ease off the throttle and settle the hull, land it. Let it in the water easy and trim back down to slow downTrim down fully to stop. Good Luck!

I dont think it needs a mechanic as it runs solid and had a mechanic look at it when I got it. I would think it would run rough if it was a mechanical problem wouldnt it? Once it is up and running and I figure out how to drive it what kind of top end should I expect (rpm and mph) so I know if I need to have it looked at by a mechanic. I really appreciate everyones help so far.Billy

I just bought a Margay and it steers tight sometimes and then times loose. In the previous reply BassCat said playing with the trim can loosen the stiffness? I wasnt sure if tightness was normal at higher speeds but reading this thread caught my interest. I have a Mercury 115

Low to mid seventies should be possible. And yes engine height and trim can effect engine torque on the wheel. On my old boat it went from stiff to free to stiff as speed and trim built up.

If your have tension on the wheel at top end the engine could be a smidge high.
