My boats buried or I’d double check. But I think my TM cables are under the plug vs. over and putting a lot of pressure on the plug like you have. I know I can’t unplug the TM with out pulling the foot pedal first so I’m pretty sure the push/pull cable/conduit are under or very tight in front of the plug. I’ve got the 74lb Maxxum too but the 42″ with a 50″ 74 Max as a back up.
motor.
Dave that is a Sharp looking rig!Dan
The older maximum foot pedal is slightly larger than the current models. There appears to be two things you could do to “declutter” the install. The first would be to trim the power cable (red/black) wire so it douse not make that loop. Cut it back so that it lays flat below the steering cable (might only need 3-4 inches), and reconnect it to the plug. The second thing you could try is to see if you can move where the steering cable connects to the foot pedal back an inch by drilling (using a threaded tap) a couple of holes and reattaching using the same two screws. Just keep an eye on the clearance when the foot pedal is pressed all the way forward. This should gain you enough clearance between the cable and the plug. You might also check around to see if you can locate a shorter plug, other than the marinco one you have now. I know Minn Mota makes one that “looks shorter”, but it looks like you would need to replace both the plug and receiver. the receiver should fit in the same hole in the Bass Cat plate. There are aftermarket other plugs that may also work, just verify that the prongs fit. JimLast edited by catmantwo on December 15th, 2014, 8:28 pm, edited 1 time in total.Your Signature …
I have always (since 73) preferred having my TM foot pedal up a little bit, about half depth. I find it helps my balance and back as I dont use butt seat up front. When BCB pioneered the recessed pedal area I just used a piece of scrap lumber, covering it up with matching carpet. It looked factory made. But now (for the last 10 or 12 boats) the factory has sold me a fibre glass insert which might just be the prevention of the tight bend in your cables.
Thanks guys! Shortening the power wire to the plug would help clean it up for sure, currently I have it wrapped around the steering cable but obviously it’s far longer than it needs to be. A while back I switched to a terrova motor since I often fish deeper big water and I loved the spot-lock, and when I got this boat I wasn’t sure what I’d want—I got this motor used as it was fairly inexpensive so I could try a cable steer again without much of a financial commitment and then get a new one when I was certain whether Id want another Terrova or not. That carpeted block for the recess looks like it might be tailor-made for a terrova pedal, so you’ve got my mind going—I figured if I ended up going that route I’d have to fabricate something myself to raise the pedal, but it might be a good solution for me in this case too. I definitely use the butt seat nearly 100% of the time, mostly as a balance-aid in waves, but I don’t think I’d mind having the pedal up an inch or two just to have something to push against to avoid feeling like I’m falling over forward…probably have to try it out before I make up my mind I think. If anyone else has ideas I’m definitely all ears, keep it coming, this is great. BTW…”for the last 10 or 12 boats”?!? You’re clearly doing something right!!
Nice looking rig Mac . — Looks like youre getting her all dialed in . — It took me a WHILE to get over that ” Going over the nose ” feeling . — ( At least I feel a bit safer now . ) — Ive got a 99 Classic , also with a Yamaha 200 and a Minn-Kota 101 , but the power plug is less than half the length of yours , so no cable interference problems . — Im a big guy , and I put some stick-on non-skid on both sides of the rail up front , and believe me , its saved me more than once !! ( Got it at Orschelns ) — It even looks good . — Raising the pedal an inch or so would be a good idea too . — ( I shouldve thought of that myself !! ) — Thats another good reason to be on this forum . — Great ideas from like minded people !! — Take care , and enjoy your kitty . — Take your time learning to drive her . — As you probably already know , shell fly with that 200 hanging back there . — Hoss
Another option would be to not use the plug at all. Cut a small hole in the bow panel just in front of the receptacle, get a small grommet for the hole, feed your power wires in directly, and hard wire them behind the bow panel. Cut the power wires to length so that there is no loop too. Install a battery on off switch on the positive wire in the rigging area so you can do a complete disconnect to the front to prevent damage to the MK circuitry when you are charging because you can no longer unplug it at the front. The only issue with this set-up is if you have to remove the MK for any reason. Your new rig looks really clean in the pics. Congrats.
That VMAX 200 is bullet proof , may be the best that they built .
Here is a link to the “short” marinco plug 3 inches rather than 6!http://www.amazon.com/Marinco-305BP-125 … rinco+plugYour Signature …
Thanks Catman–Im fairly certain that the plug linked IS the plug I have–looking at the proportions it looks identical to mine and its definitely only about 3 inches…in any case its the one that came installed on the bow panel direct from BCB. As far as hard-wiring it Id prefer not to since at some point in a year or two Im going to replace the motor anyway, I guess re-connecting it wouldnt be the end of the world but the plug seemed clean at the time! 2003 boat, 2003 trolling motor, I figured theyd fit together like they were made for each other!
