Any opinions on how this motor might perform on a Sabre FTD? I am thinking about upgrading my 150 Pro XS.
I have been considering the same for my regular Sabre. When you consider the 3.4L displacement with the 6000 max rpms of the 175 Pro XS 4 stroke, the torque from the larger displacement should give you an incredible hole shot and the extra 250 rpms would provide better top end as well. In my opinion it would be an incredible combination. There is a new Sabre FTD with the 175 Pro XS 4 stroke at bassboatcentral.com boats for sale page if you want to see what it will look like.
2019-sabre-ftd-with-the-new-mercury-175 … 38732.htmlIm not sure its going to be much faster than the 2 stroke version. My 2012 Pro XS 175 is 5500-6000 rpm range also.I would consider a Yamaha SHO as well on a new boat. Im going to be interested in some “unbiased” comparisons between the two brands 4 strokes. Im probably leaning toward a SHO.
Ive owned 4 SHOs, 3 250s and a 200, and I loved them all and would rather have a Yamaha but I think a 3.4 175 might be a heck of a motor for a Sabre.
Im with you jignpig compared to the 175 Pro XS 2 stroke. But coming from the 150 Pro XS that has a max RPM of 5750 there will be some gain. As far as the 175 Pro XS 2 stroke compared to the new 4 stroke, the difference will be on the bottom end.
I drove the Sabre at the dealer meeting 3 weeks ago with the 175 4 stroke and loved it. Had it running 67 but that is an empty boat with 2 people. I own one with a 150 and would upgrade to the 175 but I am going to the 20 ft cougar. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I have read on here where the SHO will really get the Sabre moving.I seen 69.4 with my 175 ProXs, 25 Trophy Plus. Loaded. Cool weather. I am sure it could have broken 70 with a 3 blade Fury. I have since sold the boat.
Aqua tech in FL got the blue one from the dealer demo/ meeting they just had. Sharp looking boat I heard it was really fast. I saw the p2/ 200 4s run. And it looked really insane.
It should do great. Im running a 2017 175 SHO on my 17 DC FTD. With a full tank and all of my gear…15 rods, and tackle, spare prop, and Fortrex 80…I have seen 69 +. Come out of the hole in 2-3 seconds. Add a person and its a 66-67mph boat. The 175 SHO is a difficult engine to prop, especially on some other brands, but it works well on the Sabre for some reason. I have run a 24 Tempest Plus, a 24 B&Bd SHO T1 (ran fine with one person, but with two people, the hole shot was not as good), and am now running a 25″ Bravo 1 FS, which has 4 holes for venting, but I have found the performance to be best with them all having solid plugs. The 25″ Bravo 1 FS runs like a 24″ with some more cup. When the temps here were mid 80s and humid, I could turn it to 6000 and 69.4 mph solo with the above mentioned load. Hole shot is 3 seconds or less…with two people, a little over 4 seconds. Bow lift is very good, and stern lift is just right. Still tinkering with PTP. Right now, its at 3.5″. Waiting for cooler weather, but its still running 67-68 at 5900rpm with mid 90s and very high humugity. The 4 Blade has unreal mid range acceleration and instead of a bow up hole shot, its more like a slight bow rise and then the boat just lifts out of the hole. Just something to consider…the Merc should have really good torque down low. The SHO is a 2.8L displacement inline 4. I suspect performance will be very similar.
Topend I expect them all to be similar as Im sure theyre all pushing the 10% over envelope. My question in comparing the 2-strokes of yesteryear is if the 3.0 being a 20% increase over the 2.5 was a beast on the P2 which was about a 17% increase in weight over the Sabre FTD mean that the 4.6 being 35% larger than the 3.4 make it even more impressive over the old 2-stroke or is the 3.4 not making the same torque as the 2.5?
This was helpful : )
Any updates on numbers of those with Sabre’s and the new 175 now that they’ve been out a couple years? I believe it is making ~230ftlbs which is more than the ~200ftlbs than the 2.5 2-stroke and ~180ftlbs of I4 SHO or 3.0L 150hp 4-stroke, so should have a holeshot like the little 150hp G2. Though wonder how much the extra weight and larger lower unit offset the gains.
