Just bought a New Minn Kota Terrova for my Eyra. I am not liking the way this thing has to mount it protrudes off the front of the boat by 6″ and can only use 4 of the 6 holes. They make a few different mounting plates for this but it needs a plate that can be slid back 6″ while docking or I can see a disaster waiting to happen. Any ideas? There is a universal mount by Minn Kota that slides back 6 but not sure if it will work with Terrova. Minn Kota MKA-47 and MKA-48 Has anyone used this Plate.Last edited by Coryhart on February 6th, 2014, 5:04 am, edited 1 time in total.
We like the removable mount for this application though nothing really is a good example to make it clear everything.
I used the removable mount on a big water trolling / downrigger boat, it worked great. I did not like it for bass fishing, it was difficult for me to change directions quickly with it.Last edited by mike dominick on January 30th, 2014, 2:16 am, edited 1 time in total.
I fished in a boat with electric steering and decided real quick that it was not for me. The steering just took way to long to react. Hope you figure it out……if not might be a good time to return it. There is a reason you dont see many(any?) pros with these on there boats.
Ill never be a pro but I love mine. I wouldnt have a boat without one.Dan
Dan,Out of curiosity do you ever fish in, though and between docks? This is where it was bothersome to me. Just could not get it to turn fast enough when in close quarters. Maybe there is a learning curve.Glad you like you trolling motor! Not knocking it, I just didnt personally like it for a variety of reasons steering being #1.Jon
Jon, No offense was taken. I learned from working in the Archery Industry, being a dealer, a manufacturer, and being on a couple of Pro Staffs that using what the pros use usually means very little. Everyones needs and likes vary, hence the comment. I actually do not fish around docks and do not Bass fish either. I am always Crappie fishing, drop offs, brush piles, stake beds, weed beds, etc. It works great for me. I have the one that has the foot pedal but I rarely use it, opting instead to use my remote. I have had a couple guys comment on how quickly it turns when we were in close proximity. I have run a cable steer very little so I guess I dont know what I am missing. I just like all the features the I-Pilot offers. It is handy for a green horn like me.Dan
I tried weighing out the difference between a slow steer(as I have been told) compared to all the other options the Ipilot with link has to offer. I personally think it would be great to have it follow a contour or set depth by communicating with the hummingbird fish finder without having to mess with the trolling motor. More time to concentrate on fishing!!! If I dont like it I still have the old MotorGuide on the shelf. I am hoping the newer motors are upgraded with faster turning.
Cory, It does depend on how you fish, but for me the spot lock has been really nice in several instances. I have also used it to get to a spot on a lake when fog was so thick you could barely see 30 feet past the bow of the boat. I know there would have been other ways to navigate, but that was pretty simple, just set it and enjoy the ride. Maybe the steering is slow? I do find it unusual a long time cable steer guy would comment how quick my motor turns. Maybe he had been told they steer extremely slow and he was expecting something that moved like molasses? Dunno?Dan
I am thinking the spot lock would also come in handy if you have to go in close to get a hang up undone hit spotlock button so the boat doesnt drift ashore or into a dock or tree while you are trying to get unhooked. just a thought
