New motor issues (Solved)

I have a mercury pro xs 175 and have about 1 hour on the motor. I was headed across the lake today and i start to loose power so i slow her down and it dies. I cannot get it cranked unless Im giving it gas. The boat will not idle at all, but it will go if I give it enough gas. The oil and gas are full and there were no alarms when this started. The worst part is that we just got to the lake for a few days of fishing and this happens which is typical of my luck. Ill be taking it back to the shop, but wont be able to till next week. Check the position of the fuel tank selector valve if it has one. Also make sure bulb is primed and no kink in fuel line. ???????

Check throttle cable connections on both ends..

If its a plastic (red) tank, make sure the vent is open. If built in, make sure the vent hole is not plugged. You can check this real quick by leaving the gas cap loose and cranking. If you installed the new motor on a old boat, and did not change the old fuel lines, you may have deteriorated hoses that trashed the filter. Or a fuel bulb bad. Milton

We are going with Steeler34s opinion on fuel lines and other issues. Also these were jostled on the install and that would contribute to your issues. Sounds like a fuel supply issue and you need more pump pressure to drive over a lower flow situation. We would get this boat into the dealer the engine came from and have it checked out or you will potentially damage the power head or the fuel system. BCB

The boat is a brand new Sabre and it ran good last evening and early this morning without issues. Ill check the fuel line and the vent just to see. It just seemed odd that this happened so quickly while cruising across the lake.

Sounds to me like its sucking air, maybe a line is loose, etc,,,, Please let us know what you find.You should never touch the gas while starting the new engines. fyi I dont know where you are, but surely theres a Mercury mechanic around somewhere.

Well, it was a long haul to go see Steve at Bull Shoals but they figured it out and had me running in no time. A spring that holds tension on one of the belts was broken. Not sure how the heck a 1/4 ” spring broke on a motor with 5 hours but it happened. Needless to say, it is up and running now and will hopefully not give me any more trouble. Thanks for all the suggestions. Ill definitely be coming back here for info concerning my BCB! On another note, while I was in the area, I swung by BCB and met with Rick. I told him of my issues I had been having with trolling motor interference with my graph. He jumped right on it and hopefull has me fixed up with that also (they added a groud wire to the skeg btw) Overall a good trip and am happy with the service I received.Last edited by mach316 on June 9th, 2012, 2:28 am, edited 1 time in total.
