Have been quoted approx. $400 for this pump? Is that in ball park figure for what it should be – for 2001 200hp Optimax? Also have seen listed in the $375 – $400 on ebay, Amazon and a few other sites. Possibly my problem with motor not starting – motor sounds great but just wont turn over, seems to be not getting fuel?
Im a certified Master Technician , and have been repairing things for 47 years , so , before you go throwing 400 $$ at a ” possibility ” , you really need to find out ” WHAT ” you dont have . — You can simply ” hotwire ” the pump to see if it runs . — The question is are the injectors doing what theyre supposed to !?!? — Or do you not have spark ?!? — Would be money well spent to have a technician diagnose your trouble , in my humble opinion . ——- I went through this same problem with my brothers boat , ( same year engine ) and it ended up being the computer . — Sent it to Simons to get it repaired / upgraded for 1/2 the cost of a new one . — Best of luck , whatever you do . — Hoss
Thanks! Boat is at a marine dealer (Ranger boats is only ones Ive seen on their floor) that I have been going to with past Bass Cat with same motor, except an 02 instead of current 01, for almost 11 yrs. now and never had a problem with them. Also had used them several years prior with previous rig – a Champion. They sell more Mercurys by far than any other brand and the head mechanic has been with them for around 20 yrs. I believe and he is the one checking my boat out. See what he says maybe later today? This motor is on a 2001 Pantera III that had not been in water for over a year, previous owner gave me receipts showing entire fuel system drained and flushed, few other things done too. Thanks again…….
High pressure pump replaced and motor runs great. 10th bass boat and this one quickest to plane of any Ive had including my previous, a 2002 Classic with the same 200hp Optimax. But, could only get to 5290 rpm (speed unknown) at end of day. 25″ tempest + on it (2 vent holes with large plugs, one with none?) and inner plate is 2″ lower than outer – not sure if that would limit the rpms? Also has very old style whale tail foil on it, put on by previous owner, likely reason for so fast to plane but again rpms should be able to do better than that. There, according to my partner was no “rooster tail” at all? Never had a bass boat that had no rooster tail – which to me might mean prop is way too low? Any ideas on this? Thanks
No tail is a good thing. The highest your want the tail is cowling high. Anything over that is slippage.
Thanks BCB but I have never seen a high performance type boat capable of 70mph or more that did not have a rooster tail at least to height of cowling. This one has none at all, thats why I thought prop might be too low, along with only being able to get 5290 rpms?
Cowling High is fine, no higher…
You need to measure your prop to pad, then you will know if you need to move the plate. It sounds low, but you need to measure it.
You should probably be about 3 1/2″ + or – below pad with that boat and motor setup. The P3 has never been super out of the hole, and is probably the reason for the whale tail, but the rough water ride is excellent. I run a 25 fury, or a 26 tempest, with the fury having the better hole shot and acceleration, and the tempest being a few mph faster. Mine only likes about 3/4 trim at the most
On the old style smart craft gauges trimming past 4 digital marks produces chine walk a lot, up to that it is fine and takes very little trim at all. Speed I dont know about as right now dont have speed working on the dash? Id prefer to not have the whale tail but hole shot is absolutely great so dont know if Id remove as have no idea how hole shot would be then. Wondered how the 25″ four blade Fury would be as to hole shot, handling and speed? High speed is not a requirement but would like to see close to 70mph and right now not approaching that with the 5290 rpms. Need to get my rpms up and think raising the motor will help? Ill check the measurement when I get a chance to see where its at as I think its 1 1/2 to 2″ too low?
