I have a 2009 Sabre FTD with a Yamaha F150 four stroke having alot of trouble with rooster tails. Anyone have any ideas on jack plate adjustment on this particular setup. never had this kind of problem out of my Triton so i am kinda baffled.
Just lower the jack plate 1/4″ at a time until it is gone. Are you trimming this motor to high when running ? If I am not mistaken, Yamaha does not have the cut off on the trim like a Mercury does and you can trim it all the way up out of the water when running. Good Luck
If your rooster tail is about 5- 6 or so, drop it at least a half inch, watch the clearance on the transom and play with the remainder dropping it a 1/4″ at a time. It is just too tall on the engine height. BCB
I would offer that I too have to learn the delta between my new FTD and my old Triton. I had learned that with the jack plate on my FTD, my 175 Pro XS does not require a lot of trim when running by myself. As I add more weight with my son, his gear, gas, live wells being full, etc, then more trim is required. I just listen to the engine at take off and WOT to tell me when to stop hitting the trim.
Benypron, Did you get your boat at Brechs Marine? He was putting together the same boat motor setup when I was in picking up my boat from him. He said the 150s were fairly close in performance of a 2 strokes 150s. If that is the case that is impressive. Once you get your boat dialed in can you share some of your numbers. I have a brother that is considering a BassCat Sabre and he would be interested in the 4 stroke performance. One thing for sure those 4 strokes are very quiet and oil consumption friendly. Thanks, Flyswatter
Flyswatter, I did get it from Brech great guys to deal with too but i find the F150 to be verry impressive. i have a merc on my triton and there may be a small difference in hole shot but not much. i will never go back to 2 stroke after having this. onice i get her dialed in i will share some numbers.
Those F150s are one of the best in the 4 stroke line that Yamaha produces. I believe that motor puts out close to 165HP. Strong package for sure. What kind of RPMs are you seeing and what prop are you running?
So you know When we took a 18ft stratos with a 150 XR6 and repowerd with the then New F150 Yammie we picked up 2mph on gps and NO holshot diff, I feel that the F150 is the Only Beefy 4 stroke in Yammies Lineup at least until the Bad Boy comes out……The F200, F225 regular and Sport, and the F250 are all Pontoon Motors and off shore NOT AT ALL STRONG, heck the F225 Sport at the 2009 Dealer Meeting Ran for like 10minutes, but that was a small fluke Im sure…..I cannot wait for the VMax 4 banger, Ive heard Titanium,Magnesium, possibly 5 valve heads, well pretty much like the rest of Yammies 4 stroke lineup in 4 wheelers,Bikes, ETC>…Your Signature …

First let me say your boat looks very sharp!!! The color scheme and 4 stroke Hammer caught my eye for sure. When I saw it I asked Scott (me being surprised with Scotts performance comments) the weight difference between the Yamaha 150 Four Stroke and competing 150 two strokes. He said very little. However he did follow up by saying the larger block Hammer motors (200s and up) peformance is still lacking because of the the added weight. Recently while my boat was being made at BassCat Scott got me a loaner boat. I fished out of a four stroke Hammer on a Stratos 186 boat and I was very impressed at how quiet it was. I even turned the ignition key on once or twice to see if it was running. Etecs are impressively the most quiet two stroke outboard engine with the coolest low rumbling lion sounding motors but the 4 stroke 150 Hammer was almost whisper quiet in comparison. Not a lion but a stealthy sounding motor. Congrats on your new boat and welcome the BassCat family. In closing Scott is a great guy and an asset to BassCat and their potential Alabama customers. Variable camshaft timing and higher than advertised HP. The all new digital controls are the bomb.
