I purchased a new 08 Puma with a 250 Pro XS motor and Trophy 26p prop on June 26. Now , six weeks later, I have 13 hours on the rig and the prop appears to have rust forming on it. Ive owned bass boats for over 25 years and have never seen this before. Any ideas what caused this? Do I need to replace the prop, or is there something I can clean it with to take off the rust? Ive had the rig on Beaver Lake only. Thanks.

I dont think theres any reason to be concerned. Ive seen a little rust on props before! Usually after theyve been run, it self cleans due to the particles/sand/sediment in the water. Glynn

You could always rub it with a little emory cloth to clean it up. I have always been told to never put a file to a prop…not that you would for surface rust anyway but worth mentioning. I have seen it before too, nothing serious you can clean it up and polish it up. Judd Lasiter

We are not sure if Mercury will do anything on this one. It would depend on the type of rust and amount. It is worth a call to your dealer though the decision is Mercs. We do want to add that it is not uncommon and we have seen plenty of it. Though we would not want our prop rusting either. So we do understand!

Thanks for all the replies. Ive ordered a Fury, which should arrive in a couple of weeks. When I go to my dealer to get it, Ill show the Trophy to him. The rust is forming on the base of the prop ears where they join the prop (in the bend) and just behind each prop ear, extending to the back of the prop. If it looks like this after 6 weeks, hows it going to look in a year? Ive never seen rust on any of my props before this and have used some for over 5 years. Judd, I hope youre right; perhaps Im overreacting. What do you recommend that I polish it with?

I would show it to them obviously first. But if you want to fix it yourself you could use a rubbing compound but only down there not on the blade surface. If it needs more I would try steel wool and if that doesnt cut it then I would go to the emory cloth. Not using a while lot of pressure and let the material do the work…the rubbing compound you can rub as hard as you want to though. Let the dealer tell you that you are overreacting…It is hard to say without seeing it. Good luck. JL Edited by BCB, Put the C in for you!
