Hi Just took delivery of 2012 Puma FTD w/Merc 250 XS. VERY FAST at 79.1 still running double oil and trying to set the jackplate. Any suggestion on where you guys are setting the height above the stationary bracket. When I trim it up the nose really goes up too high. Thinking of raising the jackplate and therefore the back end so the boat will run flatter. Thanks in advance.

Have you completed the 120 minute break-in period? The computer will control the oil mixture, and the motor should be trimmed all the way down thru the break-in period or it will keep oiling incorrectly… Is this what you mean by double oiling?Just curious…

Hi Gary, Yes I have completed the 120 minute break in but it should be still adding additional oil until 20 hours as I understand.

Engine height is a direct proportionate to steering torque. If your low, you have none, if your high, you have too much.

double oiling should be over after the 120 minute countdown. Youre likely running a Fury prop and the jack plate height needs to be low. Theres very little difference in performance over a range on your jack plate using this prop. Therefore, if your jack plate was set up at the factory, it is likely within the range to give good to excellent performance. If youre concerned about too much bow lift, you might be over trimming which is costing you some top end speed. And yes, steering torque = too high! 79.1 is pretty good and hard to argue!

Thanks for all the help!! Definetly not over trimming, and the setting is close as evidensed by the speed. However the nose really pops up when trimmed up at all and of course loses speed and stability a full speed therefore was thinking of raising the motor to prevent a little tail drag. I am running a 26 Fury. Tlhanks in Advance.

Tail drag (hull) will increase as you raise it, though drag from the gear case will reduce as the case raises out of the water.

Thanks Bass Cat, As usual I was about180 degrees off!! Sounds like I need to lower the motor a little, Iwill try that this weekend.
