When can I order one of the new fiberglass step boxes?

Likely a while per bcb reply the other day. I suggest looking for that thread.
After looking at my old fashion step box, and figuring $700 shipped for a new one, mine didn’t look as bad as I thought.

It’s all cost priced on materials and labor related. Definitely the custom bent stainless grab handle cost is more than one would realize. While we definitely understand the box is costly, we also know it’s cost to manufacture it.
For a comparison, we just looked up similar type of products to compare and this one is color matched finished gelcoat. These products for motorcycles are carpeted inside and vinyl outside lined.
BCB
The value is there. I think it looks awesome and I’m sure it will last longer than any outboard strapped behind it. I like the traction of carpet when stepping from the front deck to the center console. I bet this will work fine and it’s so shiny.
I guessed pretty close to the price. You have to take into consideration the costs of materials and labor. Setting up the build for each individual order is time consuming also. Rather than just changing the color carpet on the current step. This is not a prebuilt purchased step, it’s hand built. That costs.
I looked at what it cost me for a passenger console build and went from there. Thus I figure 650-700 shipped.
I hope bcb dont quit selling the regular carpeted step box! Even though i really like the “new” box and maybe eventually get one. Ive never been quick to purchase something “right off the press”. In reality its all in what one wants and what their willing to pay for their wants. My biggest concern is scracthing!. As i think others have this concern as well.
I think the fiberglass box is a very nice upgrade. But looking at functionality for me I say the grab bar is not needed especially when BCB calls it out as a significant cost factor. Also as some others have suggested, a rubber-like material covering more of the surface seems a better choice. I kneel on that lid when getting into the livewell and that grit surface is real hard on skin and clothing. I get that the surface is both a step and a place to lean on and safety is always a good concern. Considering both, I would opt for a different surface.
I think it is great that BCB is always looking at improvements and respects our opinions.
You wouldn’t want to kneel on this one. The grab bar, grit surface, and compression latch would bite your knees. I’ve accidentally one time knelt on my Basscat’s outward hinges on my knees. 😨 I learned from that mistake.
One similar to this one, with one lift latch that would only raise the lid to access the storage tray, and another lift latch that would lift the lid plus the tray to access the cooler would be the cat’s meow, IMO.
Having a Sabre with only one cup holder up front, I’d love to see a fold down seat design with those 2 cupholders when down as an option.

The do plan to offer it in time. Though the box has to be a smaller fit for previous production models. Spending time tooling molds on new models is the most important for the company. They also will have color challenges when this part is completed. The new Parts Booths in the new complex will help with ability to build parts for after market product.
They simply don’t have room or time now to build retro parts and match colors up on older boats. Waste product on mixing required and time for coloring two small molds definitely is a part of the challenge. To color a mold and glass it requires a process. Each color must be flushed and much of the colors are lost in waste materials.
Pre Production
1. Tooling
2. Mold production
3. Preparation, sanding, polishing and waxing three parts (3)
Then production
4. Cleaning molds of dust and Clear application on flake parts (2)
5. Mixing matching colors and Flake application (flake colors are not premixed and this is a manual process)
6. Spray lower inside pan in colored gel coat.
7. Backup of barrier coat (black) all parts
8. Fiberglass the parts by Lamination and wet trim
9. Removal from the molds
10. Preparation, edge preparation and cutting for assembly
11. Finish Coloring the backside of the parts
12. Assembly of the bottom pan inside the lower assembly
14. Cutting for assembly
15. Hardware install to the box, hinges, grab handles, latches, trim (2), step pad, cup holders interior pad
16. Finish assembly for shipment or install.
Packaging and delivery
Yep, nothing to it and we left out the tools and widgets.
