Always wanted to be apart of Bass Cat. Never dreamed the wife would approve it though, but went down to Temple the other day and bought a 06 Puma with a opti 225. What a pretty boat, just like all the other cats. This is my first boat, and I realize exactly how dangerous I am. Doubt Ill be seeing much over 50 for quite a long time. My only concern right now is trying to figure out how to drive this thing safely I have very strange days off Tuesday and Wednesday so I have virtually no big motor experience. I was planning on heading to Fork after I picked up the boat to spend an entire day with a guide, that I have became friends with, to have him show me the ropes. That is going to have to be put off a week or two so any tips would be appreciated. Im praticularly nervous about cornering since it appears this can get squirlley(sp) even a low speeds. Right now Im planning on taking the boat out on a little 1,700 acre lake in the area that sees virtually on traffic on Wednesdays. I fully aware at what a newbie I am so will listen to anything. Fire away. I cant tell eveyone how lucky Ive thought everyone was to own a Bass Cat, and how proud I am to now fall into this group.
Oh yeah. Ive already read 60 pages deep into this forum and all the FAQs section. Obviously not every single post, but everything I thought would be pertinent. I saw somewhere someone suggest reading the Learning how to drive a high performance boat post in FAQ. I didnt find it. If anyone could post a link that would be great.
Congrats, you definitely bought the best boat money can buy for your first boat!!
Beautiful boat. Congrats ! I would highly recommend you take a buddy along that has plenty of seat time in a rig like that. They can help shorten the learning curve…although, nothing will help you learn quicker than just getting out on the water and taking your time to get used to the feel of the boat and motor. Remember, PFDs and kill switches ! Enjoy !
Also a recent BWB magazine had an article on how to learn/practice ways to deal with emergency situations, such as quick turns at fairly high speed, etc. Its always good to know how the boat is going to react to various driver inputs in different situations, so that you dont get an ugly surprise when you least need it.2008 Pantera Classic2014 Mercury Pro XS 200
Congrats on your new ride and welcome to the Family. Great colors! A couple of things I would like to add is dont take off running across the lake just because you cant visually see any obstructions or timber. Make sure that its an actual marked boat lane or youve run the area with someone prior. I dont want to see a later post saying you damaged your Cat. You mentioned Lake Fork! Ive heard Judd say, the lake was very dangerous to run. So be careful on this one. Before you load your Cat on the trailer, be sure to trim up until you get to the trailering part of the trim. Youll know this by the change in trim motor speed. If the motor is trimmed all the way down, Start trimming up until you hear a distinct simultaneous bump / higher speed trim engaged sound. Stop there! Loading in this trim position will keep you from ruining the prop on the ramp. Below is a post on Chine walk. Youll defintely need to research this topic. Good Luck! http://basscatowners.yuku.com/topic/4529 Glynn
Nela, Fork is nasty. I wouldnt run my cat on there for anything until I seriously knew what I was doing. Thanks everyone.
Great looking boat, congrats! A lot of the guys here take boat knowledge for granted. Like opening up your lid when youre recharging to let fumes vent. And switching from nuetral to gear quickly. And a bunch of other things. By all means, ask here no matter how dumb you think it might be. Theres some really good and knowledgable people out here. Again, congrats!!!!
Congrats on a great looking Puma and welcome to the family! No need to worry too much, youll be fine with that boat. Just keep her trimmed down and hold the rpms to about 4500-5000 until you get used to her. At Fork, I would stay near the dam while you are learning to drive her to avoid all those stobs.
Congrats on the new ride. You are going to love that boat. Its a pretty ride. Be careful while learning, and things should be fine. Any questions are welcome here.
