I have been wondering with the advent of the new trolling motors by MinnKota and Motor Guide that use GPS technology and spot lock features how will this affect the Talon and Power Pole use. I have Talons on my Cougar and love there use, but of course, I would really like the new Ultrex too. I see some continued use for the anchors, but see too that the troller can take away much of these need for an anchor. I only see the need for really shallow water and sight fishing as the major use. Just opening up on some ideas about all the weight we are pilling onto our boats as well as the expense. I know it depends upon your pocket book, but us anglers always want to have it all. Of course, I remember fishing before we had any electronics; just common sense and information from others. Use old window weights as an anchor.Have a great day. Tight Lines to you all.

Ive fished 2 tournaments and a bunch of practice this year and have used the Ultrex the most, but the spawn is about to get to Montana and the power poles are the ticket then. So the answer is get both if you can, and if you cant, pick the one for what you fish the most, deep or shallow. Id have to go deep if I had to make a choice.

Mike hit it on the head, if you are going to be fishing shallow cover mostly and do not want to muddy the waters then power poles would be the way to go. But if you are structure fishing most of the time, like the ledges on Kentucky lake, or the offshore humps in the 1215 area of Toledo bend then the Ultrex would be a better bet. Both would be ideal, but cost might be the deciding factor.

Bamacat – I got new to me 2020 Caracal last June that came with 24V Ultrex. Love it and if I had to choose one or the other, I’d go with Ultrex. That said, I just pick up 8′ blades yesterday that I will be adding to boat. I fish shallow 8′ to 6″ 80 % of the time and fish alone closer to 90% (it’s great to be retired isn’t it?) Anyway, there are a lot of situations where I don’t want the TM running and especially don’t want it to be turn blowing backwash into the area I’m trying to fish when it’s trying to keep me spot locked. I saw poles to be the only solution to that and I can afford them especially with the deal I got locally at K and K Kustom. I will still use the Ultrex much of the time because you can just point in the direction you want to go, push a button, and it goes on its own without having to keep foot on peddle. I’m old, I was way last tired last season than with the Fortex I had on my Classic where you constantly had to keep one foot on the TM peddle. I’ve never had shallow anchors before but friends who have them say I won’t be disappointed. Hope they are right.
