Hi Everyone, Finally signed up for the forum. I have been a Cat (Jaguar) owner since 2001 and have enjoyed every minute of it. I am thinking of an 08 Puma this year and was wondering if anyone had any info on the Verado on this boat or an FTD. Thanks a bunch.
OK, Ill be the first to welcome you jasjr. I hope you dont have a hard a time choosing a boat as Doug Drummonds
As nice as these boats are it can be difficult at times. I havent heard much about the Verado yet. I know it is substantially more money and wasnt sure if it is worth it. Maybe I should stay with the 250xs.??
Welcome to the board jasjr…sorry, I will let someone else answer your Verado question. There are a few Puma/Verado combinations out there. Judd Lasiter
Welcome as all have said. We enjoy getting fresh ideas and new members. I have no experience with the setup you are asking about but someone will be along soon to help out. Glad youve joined us. Chris Coupel Paulina, La.Chris CoupelPaulina, La.
The Verado is re-engineered in its present form. They changed rods, pistons and the ECU to improve performance and fuel mileage on smaller boats. We have not done much with the present 2008 Verado, though we are a huge fan of four stroke engines. The original Verado combination we really enjoy. Here is one of our reasons we like four strokes, many customers today finance their rigs long term, and others still keep them up to and over 12 years. On a two stroke engine, odds are that during that cycle you could have a powerhead problem. Depending on how many hours you fish a season. That is a very expensive item on a 7 year old boat or older, in comparison to the value of the rig. With four stroke we feel there will be a higher end user hours return for the owner, thus better service and satisfaction, as well as much lower maintenance on the large impactive items. Just our reasons! BCB
I really like the Verado but acceptance has been slow for parts of the country. Dealer acceptance is part of the problem as some have chosen to avoid them or take a wait and see approach. Also it seems there is a tendency to look at the higher fuel consumption vs 2 stroke but the TOTAL cost of ownership use is very close to 2-stroke factoring in 2-stroke oil costs. One remaining factor is speed. The added weight of the Verado will keep it a few MPH slower than Opti. Many cannot live with this though the power steering (no steering torque) and DTS throttle are awesome offsets. It seems that Yamaha and Merc have made long term investments and R&D on 4-strokes so it may only be a matter of time we see a shift….no crystal ball on that time line though.
I have a 05 Puma with a 275 Verado and love it , So quiet you dont know its running without looking at the Tach , The DTS throttle and steering is unbeliveable . Yes if I had to do it all over again I would buy another Verado , Im really passed my speed days so that isnt a problem with me here , Boat handles the extra weight and handles very well !!
Wow. Thanks for all of the responses. Personally, I would give up a few (couple) mph for the quiet ride. I fish a few bodies of water that can get rough at times (Potomac River) so dependablity is a big factor for me as well. I am looking forward to the seeing the Pops Marine lineup at the show (what use to be Bassarama) this weekend. I hope to make one of the “Owners Invitationals” in the near future and hope to be able to contribute to other comments and/or questions in the forum. Good fishing everyone. It will be here before you know it.
pumaverado275: Are you from the McCall, Id area? Did you just get this boat? I am from New Meadows and would like to hear from you. Billy
