HELP!!!!!!! I just finished fishing a Stren Tournament in my 2007 Puma, with Merc Pro XS 250 and I am scratching my head. The first day of the tournament I blew 3 of the 4 plugs out of my prop, and have no clue as to why? ( Trophy 27pitch) The Merc guy at the event installs 3 new plugs but they are not the same size as the originals (smaller). That should do it, WRONG, it was worse than before…I take the boat back, he takes one of the plugs out, try that…..At bit better but not what it should be, this boat should jump out of the water with full full and livewells, and it just does not right now……Any suggestions would be appreciated… Thanks guys Keith Reed
Is it blowing out as the nose drops or is it acting like it just doesnt want to go? If blowing out put plugs in it and if it acts like it doesnt go pull plugs. You just have to figure out what combination she likes and had in it before. No two are the same but a starting point can be if no ring then plug all 4 solid…if you have a ring then put 4 large holes in it and see what it would do. Good luck Keith. Judd Lasiter
Pull another plug and see if it fixes the problem.
It actually acts like it has no low end torque at all, and is very strange as it has never happened before. I had to get my co-angler to sit up front so that we could get on pad. I am thinking about putting the same 4 four size plugs back in it and try that, otherwise I was thinking that I had a engine problem. The only question with that is with full fuel tanks and gear and livelwells full I was ruinning at about 5400rpms and at about 72mph….????
Based upon what you describe PA is right. But saying that the plugs wont affect the WOT RPM and if you were running more than that before (assume so) you might have another issue. JL
We had those 250 XS engines set up with a good hole shot combination on most of the rigs new. That original combination was from memory, one of two? 1. No Ring, two plugs, one small plug and removed, or one standard. 2. Ring on hub, two removed, two small holes 3/16″.
Judd is correct it sounds to me. There seems to be some other issue based on your WOT numbers, or a combination of plug and engine issues.
This may not even be relative to this subject but when Bassmasterreed said his partner had to lay on the front deck to get on plain, I thought, Ive had a similar problem lately. Not prop related though. Just a loss of power from my 250 pro xs. Symptoms are, loss of power, engine acting as if its shutting it self down to just idle. Can get on pad only if someone lays on the deck and you ease in the throttle. During this period while your on plain the engine sometimes regains full power for limited periods without any throttle movement but shuts back down. Really strange. This has happened twice in the last three weeks.EKs Marine diognosed the problem as bad CDMs. Nope, dont have a clue what theyre talking about. On both ocassions it was incovenient for me, but a quick fix by EKs staff. They said it has six CDMs, so the way Ive got it figured, four of the six originals remain. That means four more break downs to come!! Sorry to bring this up! Loss of RPM reminded me of my problems. Has anyone else experienced this with thier pro xs?
I appreciate everyones suggestions and I think I will try some different plug combos next weekend and see if that corrects the issue. If not, to the dealer we go……. Again thanks to everyone Keith Reed
Did your jackplate move down??? If hydraulic did the switch get bumped and if manual is it loose. Could be the loss of RPMs as well. Just a couple of ideas. Found this to be the problem on a buddies TR21. The manual plate had losened and moved down almost 3/4″. Hope this helps Sheff
