What is everyone using for their oil change? This is what the dealer gave me to use. They said never used the synthetic oil when changing oil in the SHO? WHAT DO YOU ALL USE? Will this oil be alright?
Ive ran it for over 3 years and have not had problems other than making oil for the first twenty hours or so. My dealer told me not to go to synthetic until I was sure the rings had seated.
Mine has 13-15 Hours on it now , the oil level is at the top of the full mark and smells like gas. I am going to change it. I think a little gas has seeped in.How far up on the dip stick was yours when it made oil? Ill prolly just run the regular oil for at least the first 100 hours then.
http://maintenance.yamahaoutboards.com/engine-oil-lube/All the things you hear from these old school mechanics, or new school who have been taught incorrectly…like synthetics are too “slick”, wont allow rings to seat, etc. is complete horse hockey pucks. Yamaha sells synthetic oil for a reason. After the initial change, there is no reason not to put synthetic in it. The only reason to change the first 20 hours is to remove contaminants from parts seating in. Most importantly, ALWAYS get your engine up to normal operating temperatures, usually by running it hard for 10 minutes or so, in order to evaporate the fuel and water that makes it past the rings in ANY engine during the combustion process. The way we fish, which is typically running the engine for 2-5 minutes at a time moving from spot to spot, is not adequate to evaporate stuff in the crankcase, thus the smell of fuel in the crankcase oil. There are a bunch of reasons to use synthetic oil, mostly related to its ability to withstand higher temps and shock resistance than conventional oil. It lasts longer too. With todays oils, the old rule of changing every 3k miles in your car is a complete waste of both money and a valuable resource. The only exceptions are if you run in extremely dirty environments, or are always just running down the street to the store and the oil never gets up to proper temps. Even then, synthetics are less subject to breakdown from fuel dilution.2017 Sabre FTD AE DC2017 Yamaha 175 SHOMK Fortrex 80Helix 10 Mega SI in consoleHelix 7 GPS SI GN2 on bow
Mine did the same. When it thinned out and smelled like gas I changed it. I broke it in by book and then made some long hard runs and it quit rising.
This is what I as told by a Yamaha tech . The synthetic oils will thin out on long runs and in the heat of summer . Then your oil pressure will drop . Low oil pressure will cause engine damage . You run what you want but Im running what the Yamaha s mechanics say that are trained by Yamaha are telling me . Plus no matter what your changing the oil either once a year or every 100 hrs . My last oil change cost me 58$ with filter and 10 w 30 w . With synthetic It will cost you more .
Thats what I am going with, thanks
These motors aint cheap, just want to make sure its done the right way.
I work for a well known heavy equipment company that has a oil lab that test oil on a daily basis. Used oil and new oil. One would be surprised. Oils are DEFINITELY better these days for sure. I will add I would run wat the manufacturer suggest. You are under warranty. If something was to happen to your motor there wouldnt be no beef.( your running water they reccomend). If your in doubt of the correct oil give Yamaha a call. Yamalube definitely makes good oil product. Whether you use conventional or synthetic.2013 PANTERA 2MERCURY 200 PRO XSMINNKOTA 80LB FORTREX25 fury
I will run what they recommend for sure, rednggoo I see you have put some hull stickers on your boat. They are $25. Was that a piece or a pair. Just ordered them, But it didnt specify if that was per sticker or pair? If not a set Ill have to order another sticker.
