I have a 70s (I THINK) model Mariner in-line 6 cylinder 115 HP on a river jon that I keep for playing around, beaching on the bank, etc., and the carburetors leak fuel when running. Is this something typical for these engines or will a carburetor rebuild kit fix the problem? Also, is this a job that I can do myself as I am fairly mechanically inclined, or are there some pitfalls to be aware of?Last edited by Basstar on January 7th, 2008, 12:05 pm, edited 1 time in total.

IT is not necessarily a do it your selfer job, and not necessarily a mechanics job. If you are good with Carbs then you can handle it, and finding a mechanic who is versed on carbs is harder today. This is very common on those older in line Mercs, including the in line 4 cylinders. Often if you run them considerably, the leakage stops from use. BCB

Way back in the day I had one of the old in line 6 Mercs ( Tower of Power ) One day the carbs started to leak gas like crazy. I took it to the shop and they changed out the needles on the float valves. It seems the older engines float valve needles had rubber tips on them and they were not compatible with with the newer gas additives which basically eat them up. They put in upgraded needle valves which had a different type of soft tip and it was fine after that. about 2 months later my fuel pump check valves got eat up and it also caused from the newer gas and I upgraded them myself. You may want to upgrade to the newer ethanol / alcohol resistant parts.Last edited by txmrbass on January 8th, 2008, 1:36 am, edited 1 time in total.
