One more trailer tire question

Was about to go with a passenger tire or light truck tire when it was recommended that I go with Carlisle trailer tires. Must be a reason BC isnt using them as original equipment. Is there a subtle way to get a thumbs up or down on these tires? My Marathons on my 06 have been fine, without issue, but their time is about over. Sorry to beat on this dead horse.Thanks.

I personally wouldnt go with the Carlisle trailer tires.

Thanks RazorCat. I read that thread a few times over the weekend and some in the FAQ. I guess Im just stuck on the ST vs passenger or LT tire debate. I run a tandem axle trailer for my sabre so weight really is no issue. Im just trying to figure out if the speed rating is the real reason for the preference that seems to be displayed for passenger tires over ST rated tires. The Marathons certainly dont get much love and so if I am replacing them I would like to make an informed decision. Probably just making too much out of it.The ST tire makers make a lot out of the duty cycle that trailer tires experience versus what a passenger tire is built for. Maybe its all just marketing. My Cooper Tire dealer just wrinkled his nose at the Cooper Cobra tire and suggested the Carlisle. I wasnt familiar with them but it appears they may truly be all marketing as I have seen them now on several lesser brand boats that I would expect to see cheaper products on.

Since weight is not an issue Id go Radial. Reasons1. Trailer “ST” tires maximum rated speed 65mph. Might be a few exceptions, but Ive never seen one. I drive 70+ for hours to and from the lake.2. “ST” tires are not made with braking as a concern. I suspect you have brakes on your trailer and you expect them to help stop the trailer to the best of the tires ability.3 “LT” tires are a great option but probably more expensive. Id find a good inexpensive radial tire. If you put a lot of miles on the trailer (6,000 per year or more) then worry about mileage warranty. Otherwise you will probably replace before you ever get to 30,000 before they start needing replacement due to age. Just my thoughts..

Since you have a Sabre w/ tandem axle – youre looking at about 700 lbs. max per tire. Weight isnt an issue on your trailer at all. Run what you want. Id personally stay away from an ST tire and just stick with a solid 215/70-15 car tire like the Mastercraft Avenger BCB recommends and maintain your pressure. I would pay the extra for nitrogen and balancing. Youll get a better tow from the trailer, additional tire life, and have less problems with pressure fluctuation.

Is the recommendation on pressure the same for a passenger tire as on the ST Marathons I run today. In other words, max cold psi.

I just put new Mastercrafts on my trailer in March. Ive been running them at 40 psig with no issues yet. And Ive put some pretty serious miles on them too. I agree with spending the few extra dollars to have the wheels balanced also!! Chris CoupelPaulina, La.Chris CoupelPaulina, La.

The Firehawks call for 44psi based on the tag on my Sabre FTD trailer. 40-44psi should be fine I would think on the Mastercrafts or the Cobras. Basically, the same tire.
