any ideas sure would help out-Mercury changed all six coils last month-Yesterday was fishing and started back to landing-Got up on plane and motor would only go to 4500rpm and motor would cut back and kick back in at 4000rpm-Been a Mercury man all my life but this is getting to be pathectical-Have a 5 yr. warranty on motor done lost 3months on motor not running right-Going back and forth to shop-150 opti-thanks John
cotileangler, what does the dealership or technician say? What year model is this? We have not seen many coil issues with the 150 engines, actually we dont recall one on newer models. In the larger engines yes, though not on the smaller ones.
sounds more like a fuel issue,,,but like BCB stated, a rare occasion on 150s.
I think when you hear about engines that have one problem after another that it may be connected. In other words, one problem precipitates another problem. Example: I had a coil go out in my truck once. That also screwed up the plugs and O2 sensors. A couple of weeks later the catalytic converter went out. All the following problems were related to the coil going out. Could something like bad gas, or water in it, make a coil go out then later cause other problems down the line?

The O2 sensors were probably good and the catalytic converter was the problem all the time. You would have to drive it for along time while missing to put enough raw fuel through the converter to make it go bad and probably wouldnt ruin it then. But to answer your question, no bad gas wont make a coil go out but might could ruin plugs but not likley.
not surprised. My 08 merc been in the shop a few times and all coils. Will go back to yammies soon as I can. Just my opinon
I maintain a fleet of Helicopters for a living and have been a mechanic all my life. OIne of the very best things to do is record EXACTLY what the symtoms are for the shop. Water temp, water preasure, fuel flow if you have smart guages. Make sure you add to it any gas issues, although I ASSume the 150 has a water sensor warning. After you get that all written down, take it to a AUTHORIZED shop and go over exactly what the symtomes are and what was done so far. Start withthe basics, hard to believe a newer motor has O2 sensor issues, coil issues or anything else. These should go for 10 years in a outbord. It could be as easy as a spark plug wire not seated (I did this after having my 225 run like crap, changed 100 bucks worth of plugs, still ran bad and it was a wire not snapped on).Make sure the shop puts the analyzer on it and runs all the diagnostics. I own one of these myself. Ask to see the readings and compare to normal chart info. Bottom line is accurate, simple, complete and you will get there. good luck.Milton
thanks every-one for the information-sorry for my late response-but been real busy moving dirt-motor is a 2008 model-as long as you keep motor running under 4500 rpm runs perfect-just when you give the gas and it gets to 4500 it will cut back-ranger dealer that is mercury shop said it sound like water in fuel-but there is not any warning horn or motor runs fine as long has you dont speed it up-my issues with water in gas before on trucks and cars runs bad at all speeds-we lost bass cat dealer here alexandria la and you have to just about beg ranger dealer to check it out even with business real slow right now-they get pay real good on warranty work-i have not really had time to check it-again thanks every-one -john
Run it up to EK one morning and let him have a crack at it.
One thing that can make a coil go bad is a bad spark plug. Unfortunately, Champion plugs are very popular and Champion plugs are notorious for going bad. Odds are, someone put Champion plugs in your boat. A lot of times, they are the only brand you can get. Its just been my personal experience with Champion spark plugs. As everyone else has commented, todays outboards are pretty trouble free, regardless of the brand. I prefer Mercury, but Im sure one is just as good as the other.
