2 WEEKS AGO MY 08 250 PRO XS BLEW #5&6 CYLINDERS, 15.9 HOURS. BROKE IN PER THE MANUAL. I HAVE TALKED TO 5 PEOPLE WHO OWN “08 MOTOR THAT HAVE BLOWN P-HEADS OR LOWER UNITS, JUST MY LOCAL BUDS. WAITED FOR A WEEK TO GET MY P-HEAD FROM MERC. WHEN I CALLED THEY SAID THEY WERE OUT AND HAD BEEN WAITING FOR THEM TO COME IN….. GIVE ME A BREAK.. THEY BUILD MOTORS EVERY DAY…. BUT THE WARRANTY DEPT. IS SEPERATE FROM THE NEW MOTOR MARKET. THEY RAN OUT OF POWERHEADS FOR REPLACEMENT..THIS TELLS ME THERE IS A PROB! OIL WAS GOOD, ONLY 8 SECONDS OVEREV IN HISTORY AND THEN THEY TOLD ME MERC DOES NOT REQUIRE LOWER UNIT INSPECTION THAT, I WOULD HAVE TO PAY FOR THAT? GIVE ME A BREAK. HOW MANY OF YOU GUYS HAVE HAD THIS HAPPEN? DO I NEED TO LOOK AT THE GRAY OR BLUE MOTORS? THEN THEIR ARE ALL THE REPORTS OF 08 MOTORS HAVING COIL PROBS.. NO WONDER E-RUDE WON THE JD POWER AWARD.
One would think brand new motor would get better customer service than that, but that is what I have heard ALOT about mercury. I hope BRP steps up if I ever have problems!!!
IF I WAS A MERC PRO, 500 MILES FROM THE WORLD LIKE THE PROS I WOULD HAVE HAD A REPLCEMENT IN 24 HRS. BUT I BOUGHT A BOAT MOTOR COMBO THROUGH A PRO, SO I FEEL AS IF I DONT EXIST BECAUSE MY PRO MADE THE PROFIT ON THE MOTOR. MERC TOLD ME ” THAT IS WHY WE HAVE A 5 YEAR WARRANTY” … GEE THANKS.
Sorry to hear this. Only two that I know of. A 06 250 pro xs on a Cat that blew the power head and two lower units. I Had two coils replaced in the spring of 08 on my 08 250 pro xs. No other problems on anyones rig around hear that I know of since. We both experienced great service. Im like you. We dont expect problems but when we do, we want it resolved soon as possible. Waiting “Sucks”!!! Good luck!!!! Glynn
Work through your dealer and BassCat. I feel for you, that would drive me nutz!
How a company handles them is what counts! I can say Merc made me a happy customer last year when I was having Opti problems. I am very happy to see Bombardier coming around, I was where you are with Mercury back in 03 with them. The only brand Ive yet to have a problem with is Yamaha, I know SOMEONE has problems out of them because I see them torn down everytime I visit my dealer who repairs all three brands. Hang in there, stay positive with Merc, I bet they make you happy if youll give them the chance.
+1 on the dealer and BCB advice above. I bought my boat from Sherm in IN, I live in TN. I use C&O Marine for motor service. The dealers have the HP to make things happen!
phateskat, We know you are frustrated loosing a power head, though we got the actual numbers on failures from a VERY high level position at Mercury (unnamed) and they are not bad at all. The coil issues were limited, and this was in a product conversation working on issues. They have a respectable number of failures in the recent term, and the number of engine replies for JD Power was multiples of others. Many multiples in the V6 category. We actually think Mercury and Yamaha both did very well when we looked at the data on V6 Bass market engines. Plus we are aware of multiple engine issues on all three brands at this time. We are involved in two of those now. Please do work with your dealer and please update us on the information through the contact link with a PM here. We dont use this for e-mail, though we will have the staff at the Classic view this e-mail on the PM section here. If they are in a position to help you from the Classic, they will. Please make the note concise with the serial number and the BCB Dealer who is performing the warranty and their location. No guarantees on this, though we will speak to the BCB Staff in LA and see once we read your PM. Everyone important is at the Classic. Note: Everyone important who can help if needed.
Phateskat-Run into the same problem on a coil-Boat was down for 1 month and 2 weeks-E-mailed Mercury and told them what I thought about it- they called me and said they was out of coils-I asked them the same thing that the factory must have been shut down because they had no coils-They said factory had a bunch of them but they could not ship one from factory-To me that is not good business but they dont give a hoot about customers or their warranty-John
Folks, before this rotates into a situation concerning Mercury and inventory, right now all engine companies are in this position. We are presently involved through individuals or dealers in two situations as mentioned above that individual are awaiting full dress power heads from both Evinrude and Yamaha. The inventory runs in spurts on these companies and while we know and understand your frustrations, there really are similar situations in all three companies. That being said, we agree and there is no excuse for this not being rectified within reasonable time periods. BCB
