The group 31 blue tops worked good for the trolling motor, but never held up for the cranking motor and electronics.

Sounds like a pretty common occurence. My buddy has the blue top 31s in his R boat and says they do fine and hes on his 5th season on his trolling motor but he generally only fishes 4-5 times per month. Ive only had one. It was a 34 series blue top on my old Sabre and I was using it as my cranking battery for an Evinrude 150. Not necessarily a common occurrence. Ive had great success running the optima blue tops with my trolling motor set up 24 V system. I am on my second set of optima batteries since 2006. I do use an Exide megacycle for the starting battery and to run the electronics. About anything usually works for trolling batteries. Think about how few times trolling motor batteries have been a problem on this board? The real issue is almost always the cranking battery and bigger is better there.

I have had very good luck with the yellow tops for trolling. Never had one last less than 6 years and usually 7 years. The blue tops for cranking have not proved to be as long lasting for me. I have trouble with all cranking batteries as I have two gps units, two chart, live well and stereo running all day. I have moved the stereo to one of the trolling batteries and the cranking last a little longer. With a 200 EFI I dont get as much recharge to the engine battery as the Optimax engines. Next time I change the engine battery, I will buy the largest Sears battery they sell. Last time I bought the one a step down from the top and wish I had not.

The Megacycle and Sears AGM batteries are very similar in capacities and size. Like most have said, that starting battery is what seems to be the most debatable, and thats where bigger IS better96 Eyra/12 Mercury 175 Pro XS with 2015 single axle trailer2017 Victory Gunner
