Overspeed Alarm ?

Went out today for the first time since it has cooled here in Cen Tex. Air was about 74 water about the 68 or so. Calm and smooth so I opened up on the Fury prop. Overspeed alarm beeped and I looked down to see 75.1 as I moved to 75.2 it was a constant beep. RPM was close to 5900 I would guess, forgot to look closely. Question is, Is it alright to be hitting the alarm? I was not into the rev limiter. I figure now and then it is no big deal. Wish I had a 27 fury though. ( 04 Cog FTD Merc 225 opti ) Caught a 4 lbs and a 3lbs on a jig real quick, fun little 1.5 hr fish.

There is not an overspeed alarm…it is a rev limiter alarm that you are hearing. I personally would lower the motor a bit or pay attention to your RPMs. The regular Opti has the alarm normally at 5850 roughly. Sounds like you are flying for that combo. Judd Lasiter

Ditto what Judd said. You are on the limiter,and the computer will be logging each time you buzz it. What is your current pitchFury? Try to find/try an inch bigger Fury or a comparable 4-blade to get your rpms down 100-200. Your rig is really screaming. Thanks Judd and Gary, Yes, for some reason my boat hauls @^#. I do not have it heavily loaded with tackle and I weigh about 190. I am running the 26 Fury. I cruz on trim level 10 whenever the water condition permits. ( So much fun to fly a boat ! ) I am glad to know though that I should back off when I hear it beeping. My Mechanic said not to worry about it, but I figure they made that annoying sound for a reason. I need a 27 for the winter, but keep the 26 for the hot and humid Texas summers. I do have a 26 trophy, but it will hit the limiter too. Thanks again. Eric

Sounds like the typical spring / Fall scenarios. We all gain RPM these times of the year. Just throw another live body in the boat or some more tackle. That will eliminate the need for another prop. Will also save you $$$. Glynn

My Mechanic said not to worry about it? I can assure you the computer is logging every over rev along with the trim setting you are at when you hit the limiter. I stood and watched a Regional Merc Tech Rep hook up to my Opti, they can tell a BUNCH about how you treat the engine off the ECM!

I wouldnt worry too much about whats being logged on the computer, they are designed to run past the limiter, but the limiter is does just what its suppose to do and that is to retard the timing and thus back the engine down. Though I would be concerned about being trimmed out too high or the engine too high on the jack plate. You need to drop the motor down 1/4″ – 1/2″ and get it trimmed right, it wouldnt surprise me to see you run 77! Not only will you stay off the limiter, but youll pick up another mph or two.
