P IV saddle tanks

Ive noticed some folks on the forum use their saddle tanks for general fishing. Does the P IV ride differently using the saddle tanks vs. the underseat tank? How about in rough water? Also, are there fuel gauges for the saddle tanks? Trying to help someone make a decision.

They use 10 or so in the saddles for backup reserves and run the main tank usually. They prefer weight rear for performance. There is a fuel sender in one saddle tank. We will leave the rest for others.

I have not found my PIV to run much different with gas in both tanks, I have one 10 gallon saddle tank, top end was the same whether I had 33 or 43 gallons. I have found that the biggest factor for me is to get the weight in the back of the boat and out of the front compartments, so Ill run my plugs up front and plastics, jig, and weights in the back. I had an 02 Jag before this PIV and have found this to be the biggest difference between the two, it didnt matter how I put stuff in the Jag, it ran the same top end loaded, I think thats because of the rear tanks in the Jag. A total of 43 gallons in the PIV has been enough for me, the longest run I make is about 90 miles round trip. Mike

I have 2 saddle tanks in the rear, this weekend was my first time using them, and all I can say is switching over to them from main tank was easy, and my smartcraft gauges actually read the saddle tanks level. I will run these empty before filling the front tank again, and let you know what the difference is.

I always ran both saddle tanks full, and ten gallons or so in the under seat tank for back up.

basketman, does the P IV handle rough water as well using only the saddle tanks or better using the main tank?

I know you asked D, but I ran mine this weekend in 35 mph winds up to 55/60, no problem, the boat felt like it did the day before when it was calm. Had my wife not been with me, I would have seen what it would do. Ive been told that for speed empty the saddle tanks, and Let The Cat Eat. For a better ride, keep the saddle tanks full. Im sure someone with more experience will comment on this.

I believed the same thing until I ran it with the saddle tank full as well as empty and saw no real difference in speed.

I have both kickers in the rear and really cant tell you if there is much of a differance or not. I know if Ill be doing a lot of running or on Erie, All will be full just in case, other wise, Ill run more in the rear that main just because of the mind set of rear weight=greater speed. I do have all my tackle in the front though. Good question.

Pantera IV hulls run almost like they have a governor. They run to a point on each hull and then you can gain only tenths on any one of them. They do not jump in large miles per hour loaded or unloaded usually, unless the propeller is slipping.
