Chet, Both ride and stability at rest will be different between these boats and what you are used to, but at your age i would probably be running the P2. The P2 is a great running rig, and shouldnt see much more than a 5-7mph loss compared to the Puma/250 combo. Let me know if you get over this way and wanna go for a ride in any of these models. D.
I would think at least 7 and maybe 10 especially if you try to put all your Puma tackle in the P2 and remember that two fiddy ProXS combo is HOT and he is going to a Hammer (How did I do there PA? ). But honestly the Hammer will be a little slower. I like the way the P2 fishes, it seems to be more responsive on the trolling motor than the bigger boats. I would put a handle on the passenger side for you passenger to hold on to since the rails are gone and that is about the only thing I would change about the boat. It is an impressive ride, no doubt about it. I love the big cooler, that is killer! Good luck in your decision…the Sabre FTD will be about 5 mph slower than the PII depending on how loaded. Judd Lasiter
I love my PII. If you want to take a ride in it let me know. I live close to Lay, Logan Martin, Mitchell, and Jordan.
You should expect low 70s with P2/Yamaha setup. Overall you will notice that it is a smaller boat. Theres no way to make up for the loss of length and a small amount of beam. The Sabre FTD would be even a bigger change for you should you choose that route. I really like the looks of a P2 with the absence of handrails. Storage wont be that much difference. Good luck with your decision!
I have an 07 P-2 and Im a new fast boat driver and Ive had mine just about at 73 GPS — although that was by myself with a lite load. Im convinced if one of these old pros were driving 75 maybe 76 would be the top. Mine has a 200 Opti but from what read and hear theyre all going to run pretty close. Ive never been in a Puma but I thougt riding in a Cougar the rides are pretty close. The extra foot on the bigger boat is really nice on big water in rough stuff, but for a reasonably calm day, I think the P-2 has some advantages (a little more nimble, better in tight places). For me, my P-2 is about perfect. It fits like a glove in the garage, easy and relativly economical to drive and transport. Ive never been in a Sabre, but I think a P-2 is about as small as I would go. The storage is excellent, and as Judd said, the cooler rocks! Make sure you get the grab pole on the trailer especially if you fish by yourself a lot.
Wish you could get the Merc. on the back. I see 75+ top speed with my opti on my PII. I would guess around 71-72maybe on the yammy motor. The ride of the PII is good for a 19 boat and storage is great. I dont think youll notice much of a difference in storage on the PII. I had an 03 Sabre and I upgraded to an 07 PII and there is a difference in ride and stability between the two. Mine was not an FTD Sabre though. I would say the FTD rides a little better and fishes a little bigger then a regular Sabre like I had.
Thanks for the replies. Just talked with my dealer and I pulled the trigger on the P2. Now the long hard wait. I think this boat will be a great asset in the river sloughs I fish. Had a hard time turning the Puma around in those small pockets with Cypress trees. The cost of the boat is less and will make the wife happy. Just bought a Grady White offshore boat and she made me go smaller on the bass rig. Bought this boat without ever having been in one but I know BCB builds a great product and the P2 will be no exception. Phil I am with you, I like the look without the rails. I am a former Champion owner (181 and a 206) and that is one thing I liked about them. No rails. Will post pics and performance numbers when I get it. Thanks. DOnt worry at all — Theres no way you wont love your P-2 — might take a little getting use too though.
Hey Bama96, I would be willing to bet you that your dealer and my dealer are one and the same….Scott at Brech Marine. I ordered a PII from Scott while at the Birmingham Boat Show. Another new Cat owner, misr12, put me in touch with Scott. I ended up ordering the Hammer 200 as well mainly because Scott and his guys are great at working on them if need be. My past 3 boats have been 21 Brand “X” so I cant speak of the larger Cats since this PII will be my first Cat, not quite sure why I waited so long to get in one though. I did pick up a used 18.5″ boat last year to just fun fish out of and to see how I would liked the smaller boat. Since I no longer hardcore tournament fish I found that I really like the agility of the smaller boat, a lot easier to fish out of by yourself, easier getting in and out of the garage ..etc. There are pros and cons to each. I did find myself wanting a little more HP than what the older 150 on that 18.5 produced, that was why I ended up with the PII and a 200 for a little more room and a little more torque and speed. Tell us your colors and options. Any Crimson and White in the color scheme…
Guys, Trying to decide on my new ride. I am downsizing from a Puma to either a P2 or a Sabre FTD. I know these boats wont ride quite as well but over all how do the P2s compare? My dealer is a Yamaha guy so it will have a 200HPDI on it. What top end speed could I expect? Thanks.
Same hull. Little weight difference, same engine we assume? Not all boats and engines are capable of the same top end which is why BCB is always cautious on top end expectations posted. Play with it some and see what you get.
Sounds like you are a touch too high but not far from my numbers. With that load on my 10 I would run about 71mph. Same motor and prop. My plates were up 1/8″ from flush. Is your prop in good shape? How is the steering torque? My torque was not bad at optimal and had a rooster tail cowling high. I am sure you know this but do not over trim. My PII only liked about 3/4 trim for best results.
Mr. Rich, do you know where your trim gauge was at? Mine is set for 25 to trailer. Just trying to get a comparable
There is no trim gauge that is exactly where yorus functions. Those in the know at BCB do not ever pay any attention to a trim gauge whatsoever. They drive by feel and the variances are the reason. Do you have steering torque trimmed up? If so then the engine is too high, or you could be slightly over trimmed. BCB
Did not notice any steering torque, thought about a little more raise, but know I will be on or in the limiter. Still at 21+ h2o pressure
